EAST LANSING, Mich. – After the home team claimed the doubles point, the No. 50 Dartmouth men's team battled through multiple ties to defeat Michigan State, 4-2, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility on Saturday afternoon.
The Big Green improved to 8-4 on the season, while the Spartans dipped to 7-7.
Although Michigan State won at the No. 1 and 3 doubles, it had to fight Dartmouth the whole way. John Patrick Mullane and Harry Jadun had a 6-2 victory over junior Dovydas Sakinis and senior Chris Kipouras at No. 1, but the other two matches were up for grabs.
Sophomore Diego Pedraza and senior Sam Todd had a close 7-6 loss to Doug Zade and Jasper Koenen at the No. 3 doubles, while junior Brendan Tannenbaum and sophomore Max Schmidt were at 6-6 with Gijs Linders and Brett Forman when their match was cut short.
The Green tied things up with Schmidt's 6-0, 6-2 victory over Zade at the No. 6 singles. Dartmouth got the go-ahead with a 6-4, 6-4 win by Pedraza at the No. 4 position, but the score was tied at two when Forman had a 6-4, 6-4 victory of his own over Kipouras at No. 2.
Freshman Max Fliegner had a 6-2 first set against Koenen before falling in the second, 7-5. His 6-0 third set added Dartmouth's third point to the board, while a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory by Sakinis at the No. 1 singles clinched the win for the Green.
Dartmouth will not return to action until a 2 p.m. match against Texas Christian University in Dallas, Texas on March 21. That will be the first of five road matches that the Big Green will play in the span of a week.
