Dartmouth Notes // Florida Preview
SATURDAY'S GAME
The Dartmouth women's lacrosse team will finally get back on the field Saturday afternoon as it travels south to take on No. 4 Florida in Gainesville at Dizney Stadium.
LAST TIME OUT
The Big Green opened the season last Saturday in Storrs, Connecticut, against UConn, falling to the Huskies, 16-10. Junior Jaclyn Leto began her third campaign in Hanover with a strong offensive effort, scoring seven times, the most goals in a game by a Dartmouth player in the last four years. Sophomore Lauren Maiorano and junior Campbell Probert both notched their first career points thanks to tallies in the game, while senior Jessica Frieder made her first career start in goal.
THE SCHEDULE LOOKS DIFFERENT
Dartmouth's second game of 2015 was originally scheduled to be at home against UNH on Wednesday. However, due to the continuation of winter weather late into February this year, the game was postponed to a later date in the season that has yet to be announced. The home opener is now scheduled for next Saturday, Mar. 7 against Princeton (1 PM).
SCOUTING THE GATORS
Florida plays host to Dartmouth for the second straight year and the third time in the last four seasons with Saturday's matinee. The Gators come into the game ranked No. 4 in the latest IWLCA Poll and No. 5 in the Brine Media Poll. Currently in the midst of a three-game win streak, Florida's lone defeat of the season was a 17-11 loss at home to North Carolina in the season opener on Feb. 7. Shannon Gilroy is one of the top offensive players in the nation this season with 14 goals and 17 points, while also recording 15 draws in four games. Mary-Sean Wilcox has been the main goalkeeper this season with an 8.67 goals against average and the 3-1 record.
LAST TIME AGAINST FLORIDA
These two played last played on Mar. 18, 2014 with the Gators earning the 14-7 win at home. Ingrid Hermanson had a career night under the lights of Dizney Stadium, scoring three times to lead the Big Green. Hermanson had just three games played to her credit before coming into the game, but made the most of her time against Florida, who was also ranked No. 4 in the nation at the time. Then-senior Kristen Giovanniello '14 had to make 15 saves in the game.
LETO LEADS
Leto not only set new career highs in both goals and points (7), but she also set a new single-game personal best with six draw controls at UConn. That total pushed her career figure to 50 as she entered the season with 44.
BATTLING BACK
After missing the end of last season due to injury, Maiorano returned to the lineup in the season opener at UConn in a big way. Not only did the sophomore register her first goal/point, but she finished the game with two caused turnovers, two ground balls and one draw control.
ROOKIE BALL
Four freshmen players started in the opening game at UConn with six making their collegiate debuts in the game. Larson Bennett, Ellie Bennett, Sophie Davidson and Katie O'Neill all began the game on the field, while Cara DePippo and Kristen Hinckley each entered game off the bench. Davidson picked up an assist on Sarah Byrne's first goal of the season with just 1:52 left in the opening half, while O'Neill's three ground balls were tied with Frieder for the most on the team.
