HANOVER, N.H. — Junior Lakin Roland finished with 17 points and the sophomore Fanni Szabo had 16 as the Dartmouth women's basketball team upset Cornell, 54-35, on Senior Night at Leede Arena.
Sophomore Katie Vareika chipped in nine points all from the outside and the Big Green shot 38.5 percent from the field along with nine treys. Roland added eight rebounds and had two assists. Senior Tia Dawson finished her home career with nine rebounds.
With the win, Dartmouth moves to .500 on the season at 13-13 and 3-9 in the Ivy League. Cornell is now 15-11 overall and 6-6 in league play.
Nia Marshall and Nicholle Aston each finished with 10 points for the Big Red who struggled offensively shooting 26.9 percent from the field. Cornell had its issues from the outside as the Dartmouth exterior defense held them to 3-of-18 from the arc.
Dartmouth's bench was a key in the win scoring 17 points. Freshmen Kate Letkewicz and Olivia Smith had four points each to compliment Vareika's strong performance.
Once again, Dartmouth controlled the pace of the game and led for nearly 37-minutes while trailing for just 24 seconds. Dartmouth forced 17 turnovers and capitalized with 24 transition points.
The Big Green took a 10-point lead nine minutes into play with a three-pointer by Roland. Dartmouth's lead held into the break, but Cornell cut the deficit to single digits, 28-19. Roland led the Big Green with nine points and Szabo dropped seven. Aston had Cornell's high with eight.
The Big Green shot 42 percent from the field in the first half and knocked six three's.
In the second half, the Big Red almost took the lead moving the score to within two possessions (32-28) on a 7-2 run. Dartmouth regrouped and pulled away on a 22-7 run.
Dartmouth will conclude the season next weekend at Brown and Yale.
