THIS WEEKEND
With just four more home games to go during the regular season, the Dartmouth women's hockey team will host ECAC Hockey and Ivy League rivals Brown (Friday at 7 p.m.) and Yale (Saturday at 4 p.m.) at Thompson Arena this weekend.
LAST TIME OUT
The Big Green ended their road weekend with a record of 0-1-1, tying Princeton by a score of 2-2 on Friday before falling to No. 5/5 Quinnipiac, 3-1. Dartmouth had a 2-0 lead halfway through the second period, after Laura Stacey opened scoring at 7:58 in the first period and Eleni Tebano tacked on a power-play marker at 10:03 in the middle stanza. Four minutes later, the Tigers got their first tally on the board with a Brianna Leahy goal and Molly Contini tied things up at 10:53 in the third period. The Green and White got one shot off in overtime, but the game ended in a tie. Robyn Chemago had a career-high 43 saves. The following day in Connecticut, the Bobcats scored twice in the first and once with five minutes remaining in the third to take a 3-0 lead over Dartmouth. At 16:09, Brooke Ahbe took advantage of a deflected puck that landed directly in front of the net and scored the Upper Valley squad's lone marker of the day.
SCOUTING THE BEARS
January was a tough month for Brown, who lost all but one of the nine games it played. On Jan. 23, the Bears stunned with a 3-2 win over Yale, with the game-winning goal going to Janice Yang just 48 seconds into overtime. Netminder Monica Elvin had a career-high 47 saves, standing tall at 1:46 in the second period to stop a Bulldog penalty shot and keep the game scoreless. The following day, Brown fell to Yale by a score of 6-3. Prior to their win against Yale, the Bears had been held winless since a 4-2 victory at Providence on Nov. 29. Kaitlyn Keon leads the team with nine goals and seven assists for 16 points.
LAST TIME AGAINST BROWN
Just over a month ago, Dartmouth picked up its first Ivy League victory of the season with a 5-1 win over the Bears at Meehan Auditorium. The Big Green were led by Samantha Zeiss, who scored two goals, and Karlee Odland with her two helpers. Dartmouth took a 3-0 lead within a 10-minute span, with Olivia Whitford netting her first of the season at 6:38, Zeiss finding the back of the cage 17 seconds later and Lindsey Allen tacking on one more at 17:11. Sarah Robson scored the Bears' only goal of the game at 19:04. After a four-goal opening period, the Green went on to score twice more within three minutes of each other in the second, with Ottenbreit pocketing the puck at 13:39 and Zeiss adding her second of the day at 16:47. Chemago had 14 saves in the winning effort.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Yale had a 1-1 weekend, starting things off with a 3-2 win over No. 8 Clarkson before falling to No. 9 St. Lawrence, 4-3. The Bulldogs were down, 4-1, in the second period of their game against the Saints and rallied to get back to within a point, but the comeback fell short, as netminder Carmen MacDonald made 10 saves in the final period to hold on for the win. Leading the team is Jamie Haddad with her eight goals and 12 assists for 20 points.
LAST TIME AGAINST YALE
The Big Green opened 2015 with a 5-1 loss to Yale at Ingalls Rink. Odland scored Dartmouth's only goal 10 minutes into the second period, tallying her seventh of the season. Yale and Dartmouth each had a number of opportunities for goals early in the first period, but both teams' defense was on point and thwarted many close calls. Hanna Astrom opened scoring at 11:02 in the first and the Bulldogs went on to score three in the second and one in the final period to take the win.
ECAC HOCKEY STANDINGS
Playing its first conference games since Jan. 10, Quinnipiac still sits atop the standings with a 12-2-2 mark. Harvard holds on to second with a 12-3-1 record, while Clarkson remains in third at 10-3-2. At 6-8-2, the Big Green is tied for seventh with Yale (7-9-0) and the pair sit behind St. Lawrence (10-3-2) and Princeton (9-6-1). Colgate, Rensselaer, Brown and Union make up the bottom part of the standings.
HUDAK & CO.
Having been with the Big Green women's hockey team since the 2003-04 season, Mark Hudak has compiled a record of 215-120-30 as he continues through his 12th season. His accomplishments with the team include two Ivy League titles, two ECAC Tournament titles, one ECAC regular-season title, six NCAA Tournament appearances and two Frozen Four showings. On the bench, Hudak is joined by associate head coach Holley Tyng, who is in her 10th season with the team, and assistant coach Josh Liegl, who returns to the Big Green coaching staff for his third year.
CAPTAINS
The Green and White are led by captain Karlee Odland, and alternate captains Illikainen and Catherine Berghuis. This is the first time since the 2010-11 season that just one player is wearing the 'C'. So far in the 2014-15 season, Odland leads with seven goals and seven assists for 14 points. Illikainen has netted four goals and six assists and Berghuis has two goals and six helpers of her own, assisting on Ahbe's goal at Quinnipiac on Saturday.
LEADING THE WAY
Allen and Ottenbreit are tied for first on the team in points with 20. Allen has a team-leading 15 goals and five assists, while Ottenbreit has netted nine goals and has tacked on 11 helpers. Both Big Green forwards assisted on Tebano's goal at Princeton. Stacey is right behind with 19 points on eight goals and 11 assists, tallying Dartmouth's first goal against the Tigers.
FRESH FACES
Four freshmen were added to the roster at the start of the season. The talented group consists of forwards Brooke Ahbe, Elena Horton and Morgan Turner, and defenseman Hailey Noronha. Ahbe was selected to the United States U18 National team that won silver at the U18 World Championships in Hungary this past year, while Noronha was a two-time member of the Canada U18 National Team that won gold in Budapest in March. Horton and Turner's teams have both played at the USA National Championships. Since first donning the Green and White uniform in October, Turner has netted one goal and Horton has tallied one assist. Ahbe has scored three goals and an assist under her belt and Noronha has four helpers.
