LYME, N.H./CRAFTSBURY COMMON, Vt. — Junior
Maisie Ide (Minneapolis, Minnesota) and
Lizzie Kistler (Santa Rosa, California) claimed the top two spots on the podium in the women's slalom on Saturday to highlight Dartmouth's day at Winter Carnival held at the Dartmouth Skiway and the Craftsbury Outdoor Center. The Big Green finished their carnival with 841 points, while Vermont took the title with 926.
One day after the women's alpine team put six skiers in the top seven in the giant slalom, Ide and Kistler set the pace for the slalom with the top two times on the first run in 51.53 and 51.65 seconds, respectively. The two maintained their places in the standings, as did the next four skiers, with Ide enjoying her third career podium finish and first victory of her collegiate career thanks to her combined time of 1:45.21. For Kistler, who posted a time of 1:45.52, this was her ninth career trip to the podium. Freshman
Kelly Moore (Ottawa, Ontario) continued her consistent rookie campaign by placing ninth in 1:48.52 with classmate (and yesterday's giantl slalom champion)
Libby Gibson (Jamaica, Vermont) right behind in 10th at 1:48.78. The top three amassed 128 points for the Big Green, besting the 116 recorded by the Catamounts.
Dartmouth had just one other skier step on the podium on Saturday, that being junior
Corey Stock (Lincoln, Massachusetts) in the women's 10K Freestyle in third with a time of 31:30.4. Annika Taylor of the University of New Hampshire won the race by more than 30 seconds with her time of 30:20.5. With senior
Julia Harrison (Minnetrista, Minnesota) and junior
Mary O'Connell (Steamboat Springs, Colorado) crossing the line in 15th (32:50.7) and 18th (33:07.1), the Big Green totaled 92 points to finish the event in third behind UNH (116) and Middlebury (103).
In the men's 10K Free, Vermont swept the podium, led by Rogan Brown's 25:42.6. The first Dartmouth skier to finish the course was sophomore
Fabian Stocek (Jilemnice, Czech Republic) in sixth with a time of 26:50.6. But the Big Green also had two others place in the top 10 in senior
Silas Talbot (Anchorage, Alaska) and freshman
Luke Brown (St. Paul, Minnesota), one after the other in ninth and 10th with times of 27:00.5 and 27:01.7, respectively. Yet the Green was third in the team standings, just one point behind New Hampshire's 95.
Back on the slopes of Thomas Trail, the men's alpine team got a solid outing from senior
Ben Morse (Carrabassett Valley, Maine) who recorded top-10 times on both runs, which added up to a seventh-place finish in 1:38.96. Junior
Sam Macomber also snuck into the top 10 with splits of 50.91 and 48.49 seconds to claim 10th. The other Dartmouth skier to score for the team was freshman Kevyn Read (Calgary, Alberta) in 12th with a combined time of 1:39.80. With Vermont having three of the top four, including champion William St. Germain in 1:37.97, the Catamounts won the event with 135 points with Middlebury second (106), UNH third (98) and the Big Green fourth (95).
The ski team travels to Middlebury next weekend to participate in the carnival at the Snow Bowl and the Rikert Touring Center. The action gets started on Friday morning.
