WASHINGTON, D.C. — A wild offensive affair took place on Tuesday afternoon, as the Dartmouth softball team set a season-best with 12 runs on 10 hits to defeat George Washington, 12-8.
Senior Kristen Rumley and junior Morgan McCalmon led Dartmouth on the afternoon. Both individuals aided the team in the batter's box and inside the circle. Rumley started the contest and pitched three innings allowing three runs on four hits. McCalmon secured the win tossing three innings and allowing two runs on three hits.
At the plate, Rumley went 2-for-4 with four runs batted in. McCalmon on the other hand used the long-ball to her favor and belted two home runs to snap any early seasons struggles she might have had.
Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a leadoff double to right center by junior Katie McEachern and then a walk by freshman Lourlin Lara. With runners in motion, sophomore Maddie Damore singled up the middle to score McEachern from second. The Big Green nearly added a second run, but a Rumley hit was turned into a fielder's choice at the plate as Lara was looking to score.
The Colonials tied the game in the bottom of the frame with a comeback single to the pitcher by Victoria Valos that scored Megan Linn. Later in the frame, another infield single by Carlee Gray plated Valos to give the hosts a 2-1 advantage.
The lead didn't last long, as junior Morgan McCalmon belted a solo home run on a 2-2 offering to tie the score.
In the third, it was Valos once again aiding the Colonials with a leadoff home run to retake the lead, 3-2. Once again, the Big Green responded with yet another home run from McCalmon, this time it was with two outs and sent over the left-center wall to tie the game at three-all in the fourth.
In the fifth, it was Rumley who helped out with a pair of runs on the bases-loaded single up the middle. McEachern began the stanza by getting hit with a pitch and then stole second on a strikeout. Damore then drew a full-count walk as did sophomore Karen Chaw before Rumley came to bat and set the merry-go-round in motion.
GW's Linn tied the seesaw battle for the fourth time in the contest in the bottom of the frame with a two-run homer by Linn after a catcher's inference call began the inning.
In the sixth, Dartmouth stuck again and scored runs for the third consecutive inning and took a 9-5 lead. The visitors began the inning when McCalmon reached on a hit by pitch and freshman Madison Smith walked on five pitches. Senior Megan Averitt sent a sacrifice bunt to third that allowed pinch running freshmen Brittany Mann and Tiffany Dyson to advance one base.
Rather than face one of Dartmouth's best all-time hitters, the Colonials gave McEachern an intentional walk to first to load the bases for the second straight inning.
The walk paid off for the Big Green as Lara crushed her first offering down the left-field line for a two-run two-bagger that scored both pinch runners. Following the score, GW's Sarah Costlow was pulled from the game after allowing nine runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings after facing 29 batters. Costlow was still on the hook for the next pair of runs to propel the Big Green ahead by four. Relief pitcher Paige Kovalsky walked Damore before striking out junior catcher Kathy Dzienkowski.
The next batter up for the Big Green added her second hit of the day and fourth RBI with a single to right center that scored Lara and McEachern. Junior Kelsey Miller lined out to Rochelle Draper in right to end the Big Green onslaught.
The Big Green did not sit back in their final at-bats and tacked on another three runs for insurance purposes. The now black and blue Big Green saw two more players — McCalmon and McEachern — reach base after being hit by a pitch, which was sandwiched between a left field single by Dyson. A bases loaded walk to Lara brought home McCalmon and a sacrifice fly by Damore scored Dyson. The final run came from Dzienkowski's single down the right field line.
The Colonials added three runs in the seventh, but Dartmouth's nine runs over the final three innings preserved the win.
Dartmouth will take on Maryland on Wednesday in a late afternoon doubleheader starting at 5 p.m.
