COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Junior Morgan McCalmon drove home three runs and pitched a complete game to help the Dartmouth softball team (7-12) pick up a split against Big Ten member Maryland (20-13) on Wednesday evening. The Terrapins took the first game, 18-8, in another wild offensive contest in six innings, but McCalmon did the job in an 8-5 victory for the guests in the nightcap.
Dartmouth's offense was potent for the second straight day as the team scored 16 runs overall with 19 hits and two home runs. Junior Katie McEachern had four hits on the day, as did McCalmon. Sophomore Karen Chaw had a good outing in the first game knocking home five RBIs on three hits.
The Big Green's pitching struggled, allowing 23 runs in 12.2 innings. Senior Kristen Rumley was charged with the loss in the opener after she replaced freshman Breanna Ethridge and allowed five runs on five hits in three innings. The rookie starter surrendered seven runs over 1.1 frames. Sophomore Ashley Sissel then yielded six runs in 1.1 stanzas before Maryland ended the game with two outs in the sixth due to the mercy rule.
McCalmon had one bad inning in the second game but came away with her third win of the season in a complete game. She allowed five runs — all in the fourth — on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
In the first game, Dartmouth jumped out to a 3-0 lead on three hits in the opening frame. Singles by McEachern and freshman Lourlin Lara allowed Chaw to belt a three-run blast over the left field wall.
Maryland added two runs in the second on a two-run homer by Kylie Datil. The home run was her first of two on the day and the first of five in the contest for the Terrapins. Dartmouth scored two runs in the third to hold a three-run lead on a two-run double to left center by Rumley.
Lara added another run for the visitors in the fourth on a double to left field that plated McEachern, who singled in the previous plate appearance.
The game changed in the fourth, as the hosts scored eight runs on seven hits (two home runs) to take a 10-6 lead. Maryland put the game out of reach with two more runs in the fifth, which Dartmouth combated, but six more in the sixth to end the game early.
Kaitlyn Schmeiser recorded the win and allowed six runs on eight hits in four innings. Hannah Dewey completed the game in a non-save situation.
In the second game, neither side scored in the first two frames, but Dartmouth put up a five-spot in the third. A leadoff walk to McEachern and a pair of singles up the middle by Lara and sophomore Maddie Damore loaded up the bases.
With one out, McCalmon then drove home McEachern and Lara with a left field single and scored on the next at bat; a throwing error that moved the hitter, junior Kelsey Miller to second. The final run came off the bat of sophomore Chloe Madill whose single up the middle scored Miller.
Maryland tied the game in the fourth with back-to-back homers by Datil (3 RBIs) and a solo shot by Lindsay Schmeiser.
Tied at five-all in the sixth, McEachern doubled to left field and scored on an error by the right fielder on a hit by Chaw. McCalmon then added her third RBI of the game on a double up the middle.
Dartmouth put the game out of reach with a solo home run by freshman Tiffany Dyson to open up the seventh.
Dewey took the loss allowing three runs (one earned) in four innings of relief work after Brenna Nation pitched the first three frames and allowed five runs (two earned). Maryland committed four errors in the finale.
Dartmouth will begin Ivy League play on Friday afternoon at Penn and then Saturday at Columbia.
