NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Dartmouth softball team needed a sixth-inning comeback in game two to sweep Saturday's Ivy League doubleheader with Yale, 16-2 (five innings) and 5-1 at the DeWitt Family Field.
Dartmouth (16-13, 9-1 Ivy) nearly exhausted itself after scoring 16 runs in the opener and nearly went flat in the nightcap before scoring five times with two outs late in the game. To its credit, Yale (7-14, 2-6 Ivy) bounced back after tying its season-worst runs against total, and allowed just one hit into the sixth before sophomores Maddie Damore and Karen Chaw illuminated the scoreboard.
In the opener, the Big Green sent four balls over the fence and scored in four of the five innings needed to take the shortened game. Senior Kristen Rumley (10-10) allowed one run on three hits in four innings of work. Junior Morgan McCalmon recorded the final three outs, but allowed one run on one hit.
Junior Katie McEachern and Chaw went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and hit two of the four long balls. The other two came off the bats of McCalmon and Damore. The quartet was responsible 10 of the 14 runs batted in for the visitors.
Dartmouth scored its first run on McEachern's leadoff homer but stranded two runners on base in the opening frame. In the second, sophomore Chloe Madill was hit by a pitch and then scored on McCalmon's homer. The Big Green continued to pour runs on the board in the second with a three-run homer by Chaw and led 6-0.
The Big Green scored six more runs in the fourth to take a dozen run lead over the Bulldogs.
Sophomore Alyssa Jorgensen led off the with a walk followed by a single by McEachern. The duo stole second and third and then advanced on a wild pitch. McEachern would cross the plate on an error to make it 8-0. The lead stretched to double digits on a two-run blast by Damore. The final pair of runs came on a single to left field by McCalmon.
The onslaught continued in the fifth with four more runs after Yale scored a run on two hits in the fourth.
The Bulldogs scored their second run in the fifth before the game was called due to the mercy rule.
In the second game, McCalmon and Yale starter Lindsay Efflandt had a true pitcher's duel through three innings. In the fourth, Yale struck first with a RBI single by Hannah Brennan.
Needing just four outs to record an upset, Efflandt found herself in a jam when she walked freshman Lourlin Lara. With two outs and the Big Green recording just one hit in the prior 17 at bats, Damore ripped a single to left field that scored Lara from second.
Dartmouth took the lead on the next at-bat when Chaw nailed her second homer of the day down the left field line. The visitors would score two more runs and take a 5-1 lead on an error that plated junior Kathy Dzienkowski and a RBI off the bat of McCalmon that scored junior Kelsey Miller.
Rumley tossed a perfect seventh inning to give McCalmon her sixth win of the season. The Oklahoman allowed one run over six innings with five strikeouts.
Efflandt took the loss but pitched well despite the sixth inning collapse. She allowed three earned runs on five hits and fanned four Big Green hitters.
Brennan led the Bulldogs with two hit and a pair of runs batted in. Sydney Glover was responsible for the second run in the opener as she singled in the fifth.
Dartmouth and Yale will conclude the Ivy League North Division showdown on Sunday with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m.
