BROOKLINE, Mass. – After trailing, 1-0, at the start of the second half, the Dartmouth women's soccer team pulled out a 3-1 victory over Northeastern at Parsons Field on Friday evening.
The Big Green improved to 4-1-1 on the season, while the Huskies dipped to 6-3-0.
Senior Jill Dayneka scored her first collegiate goal when she tied the score at one in the 67th minute, and classmate Lucielle Kozlov netted the game-winner and an insurance marker within a 10-minute span.
“I think Northeastern is a very good team that works tremendously hard,” head coach Ron Rainey said. “They put us under pressure in the first half and I thought we steadied ourselves well and really came out and battled hard in the second. It was a very good team effort and we had a lot of energy. We talked about it at the half and knew we had to come out and outwork them and thought we were able to do that both offensively and defensively.”
In the minutes leading up to the Huskies' last-minute first-period goal, the Green had two close calls. In the 33rd minute, senior Jackie Friedman fired at Jill Quinn in net, but the Northeastern goalkeeper stopped the shot. Three minutes later, freshman Remy Borinsky hit the crossbar.
At 42:36, following a corner kick by Breeana Koemans that was blocked, Deandreis picked up the loose ball and sent it into the upper right corner of the net to give the home team a one-goal lead heading into the second half.
Five minutes into the second, the Huskies almost increased their lead to two, but Taylor Caparo's shot hit the crossbar. In the 54th minute, junior Holly Patterson tried her hand at outsmarting Quinn, but was thwarted in the attempt.
At 67:33, following a corner kick by Borinsky, Lukas headed the ball into the center of the box to tie the score at one with just over 20 minutes to play. Six minutes later, at 67:33, Kozlov scored her fifth tally of the season with her finish to the center of the box, with the assist going to freshman Lauren Lucas. At 82:28, Kozlov added another goal, poking it home after a scramble in the box, to give Dartmouth a comfortable 3-1 lead with time winding down quickly.
“Lucielle is getting herself into good places,” Rainey continued. “It is so rushed when you're close to the goal, but she remains composed and I am really proud that she is taking care of the opportunities. I was also really happy that Jill could score on a set play.”
The Big Green outshot the Huskies, 10-9, but Northeastern had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. In net, junior Casey Cousineau had two saves to earn the win, while Quinn stopped five shots in the losing effort.
Dartmouth will return to action on Sunday, when it hosts Sacred Heart at 1 p.m.
