MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Following a goal by freshman Lauren Lucas in the first half and a tally by Memphis' Elizabeth Woerner in the second, the Dartmouth women's soccer team battled through 20 minutes of fast-paced overtime action to tie the Tigers, 1-1, at Vanderbilt's Soccer/Lacrosse Complex on Sunday evening.
The Big Green are now 1-1-1 on the season, while the Tigers have a record of 2-2-1.
“Lauren's goal was really nice,” head coach Ron Rainey said. “It was great to see such progress from her. We want to continue that as we move through the next games and get cleaner and cleaner in our attack.
“As we defended through the second, we tried to not give them chances and we did that well,” Rainey continued. “Our forwards were given good opportunities and that led to shots.”
Dartmouth and Memphis played relatively evenly throughout the opening minutes of the game, as the Green took a 5-3 advantage in shots. With 17 minutes to play in the first, Lucas picked up the ball just inside the box and shot from the right to get Dartmouth on the board and score the first goal of her collegiate career.
The Tigers upped the intensity in the second half, dominating control of the ball and having six attempts at a tally of their own before sophomore Melanie Vangel took the Big Green's first shot of the period over 20 minutes in.
Memphis' increased efforts to tie the score paid off soon after that. At 79:14, Woerner had her shot deflect off a defender from 18 yards out and fly into the top right corner to tie the score at one with just over 11 minutes remaining in regulation. A combined four shots were taken after that, but neither team could fool the opposing goalie again, and the game went into overtime.
At 99:01, Woerner looked to score the game-winner, but junior Casey Cousineau was able to make the save and force the game into the second overtime period.
The Tigers managed to get two shots off in the second 10 minute overtime period, but neither were in danger of going into the net as they both sailed clear over the crossbar.
Memphis outshot Dartmouth, 24-12, with half of the Tigers' attempts taking place in the final 20 minutes of action. Vangel led Dartmouth with five shots, while freshman Remy Borinsky had two of her own. In net, Cousineau ended the day with six saves, and, on the other side of the field, Maryse Bard-Martel stopped two shots.
“Overall, it was fun to watch us compete this weekend,” Rainey said. “If we can compete like this all year, the team will be very proud of themselves and their efforts. We need to get some good recovery over the next couple of days and keep putting pressure on ourselves so we can put pressure on other teams higher up the field and get more chances inside the 18-yard box.”
On Thursday, Sept. 10, Dartmouth will travel to New York to face Albany at 5 p.m.
