HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth field hockey team dropped a 2-1 contest Saturday against Brown in its the Ivy League home opener at Chase AstroTurf Field.
The loss leaves the Big Green 3-5 overall this season and 0-2 in conference games, while the Bears improve to 5-2 and 2-0 in Ancient Eight tilts thanks to the one-goal win.
“We can and should win games when we play a full 70 minutes,” head coach Amy Fowler said. “Unfortunately, we didn't play 70 minutes of good field hockey today and it proved to be the difference. I am disappointed with the result, but I am happy that we play again tomorrow so there is a quick turnaround to put this game behind us.”
Brown's Jaclyn Torres scored the opening goal of the game in the 32nd minute, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead headed into the intermission.
That lead last roughly six and a half minutes into the second stanza before junior captain Morgan Philie scored her third goal of the season to tie things up at one apiece. Sarah Tabeek and Anna Ewasechko picked up assists.
However, Lucy Green finished a great passing play from teammate Ellie Seid at the side of the cage just three minutes later to put the Bears back on top for good.
Any comeback bid was thwarted thanks to 12 second-half corner attempts for the Bears to Dartmouth's one. In all, Brown held a 17-4 edge in penalty corners during the game. The Bears also held a 23-4 advantage in shot attempts.
Freshman goalkeeper Emma Plumb recorded nine saves in the loss with Ewasechko recording a defensive save of her own early in the game.
The Big Green are back in action Sunday at 2 p.m. at non-conference Northeastern.
