HANOVER, N.H. – Sophomore Evie Bird notched the first two-goal game of her career, but the Dartmouth field hockey team was unable to overcome the potent offensive attack of Yale on Saturday afternoon.
The Bullodgs came away from Chase AstroTurf Field with a 7-4 Ivy League win thanks in large part to a six-goal first half and a pair of scores from Katie Smith off the bench.
"Unfortunately we came out flat in the first half and Yale completely capitalized on that," head coach AMy Fowler said. "They played very hard and put us on our heels. We had to play through some adversity, and we did have a few kids step up when called upon, but it wasn't enough.
"I was once again proud that we battled in a more evenly matched second half, but we just can't get ourselves in a hole going into halftime," Fowler added.
Yale (5-7, 1-3 Ivy) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the seventh minute on score from Carol Middough, only to be matched by Dartmouth (3-9, 0-4 Ivy) freshman Katie Spanos just 40 seconds later.
The Elis responded with tallies from Danee Fitzgerald and the first of the day for Smith in the following six minutes. Big Green junior and team captain Morgan Philie blasted in her fourth of the year to cut the lead to just one again.
However, Yale all but put the game out of reach with three goals in the following four minutes. Bird scored the first of her two goals on a corner play with no time remaining in the half to send the home team to intermission down, 6-3.
After the Bulldogs put another on the board early in the second half, Bird picked up her second of the day in the 51st minute to cap the game's scoring at 11 total goals.
Freshman goalkeeper Emma Plumb got the start and made two saves, while allowing five before being lifted in the 28th minute for Hailey Valerio. The sophomore stepped in and made eight saves in her 42:08 of play, allowing just two scores in that time.
Yale led in shots, 30-17, while the Big Green held a 9-8 advantage in corner plays.
Dartmouth is back in action next Friday afternoon at Columbia. The tilt in New York is set to begin at 5 p.m.
