THIS WEEKEND
Dartmouth women's hockey will play its first road games of the season over the weekend, heading to New York to face St. Lawrence on Friday and Clarkson the following day.
LAST TIME OUT
Dartmouth vs. Northeastern
The Big Green opened the 2016-17 season on Friday evening, falling to Northeastern by a score of 3-0 at Thompson Arena.
After a scoreless first period, Northeastern (5-2-1) got on the board halfway through the second when Kasidy Anderson broke away and backhanded the puck into the top of the net to make it 1-0. The Big Green (0-1) ended the second period with five straight shots, but the Huskies remained a goal ahead.
Dartmouth returned to the ice for the third a more determined group, outshooting Northeastern in the opening minutes while trying to even the score. Early on, Kennedy Ottenbreit and Emma Korbs put together a pair of shots in rapid succession, but were thwarted by NU goaltender Brittany Bugalski.
A few minutes later, freshman Christina Rombaut tried her luck, but Bugalski got in the way of that one as well, making a big save to keep her team up one. At 10:57, Halle Silva made it 2-0 when she finished off a nice offensive zone passing play by batting in a puck at the side of the net.
With an empty net and 25 seconds left on the clock, McKenna Brand picked up the puck in the neutral zone with no one ahead of her. After losing the puck over her stick, she managed to corral it and get a backhand from behind her skates on goal. The puck seemed destined to cross the line and into the net, but Caroline Shaunessy reached out and pulled it off the goal line with her outreached stick. The Huskies did eventually manage their third marker shortly thereafter when Denisa Krizova hit empty net from the blueline with just six seconds remaining.
Dartmouth vs. Harvard
Two days later, the Big Green dropped their ECAC Hockey opener to Harvard, 5-1. The Crimson picked up their first conference victory of the year. Tess Bracken scored Dartmouth's first goal of the season and just the second tally of her career halfway through the second period. Bailee Brekke also ended the day with a point by assisting on the marker, getting the first point of her collegiate career.
After a scoreless first period that saw Dartmouth have a 10-4 shot advantage, both teams found their stride in the second to score a combined three goals. Harvard got on the board first with a Sydney Daniels power-play marker at 3:50, getting the puck from Haley Mullins just outside the crease and pocketing it in the left corner of the net.
At 9:46, Brekke's shot from the right circle was saved by Brianna Laing, but unfortunately for the Crimson goaltender, the puck bounced to the left of the crease and was sent behind Laing's left leg by Bracken to tie the score at one-all. Less than three minutes later, Lexie Laing scored the eventual game-winner, receiving the puck from her sister in net and skating freely down the right side to send it into the left corner of the cage.
Three more goals were scored in the third, but all were netted by Harvard. Val Turgeon made it 3-1 at 9:34, while Daniels completed her hat trick with markers scored at 13:17 and 16:09, giving the Crimson a 5-1 edge that would last until the final whistle.
SCOUTING ST. LAWRENCE
The Saints started the season on a six-game unbeaten streak, defeating Northeastern in two (5-0, 6-5), winning one against Clarkson (2-1) before tying the Golden Knights the following day (3-3), taking down Vermont in a pair (3-1, 2-1) and winning against Concordia (3-1). Like Dartmouth, St. Lawrence faced McGill in an exhibition game to start the year. Unlike the Big Green, which tied the Martlets in overtime, the Saints were shut out, 3-0.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE SAINTS
Dartmouth went 0-1-1 against St. Lawrence last season, falling by a score of 4-2 at home on Oct. 30 before skating to a 2-2 overtime tie on the road almost three months later. On Jan. 16, the Big Green snapped a 10-game losing streak with their tie versus the Saints at Appleton Arena. Ottenbreit tied the score at one-all a minute after St. Lawrence's, and Ailish Forfar gave Dartmouth a one-goal lead late in the second, only to have the Saints tie the score less than halfway through the third period. Just five shots were taken during the extra five minutes and the game ended in a draw.
SCOUTING CLARKSON
The Golden Knights enter the weekend with a record of 4-3-1 and will open conference play against the Crimson the day before meeting the Big Green. So far, Clarkson has defeated Penn State (4-2, 2-1) and UNH (2-1, 3-1), fallen to St. Lawrence (2-1) and Wisconsin (3-2) and tied the Saints (3-3).
LAST TIME AGAINST THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS
The Big Green went 0-1-1 against Clarkson in 2015-16, tying the Golden Knights, 3-3, on Halloween and falling, 1-0, later in the season. On Jan. 15, a goal scored in the first minute and a half of action was the only marker of the night as fifth ranked Clarkson defeated Dartmouth, 1-0, at Cheel Arena. Robyn Chemago was tested for the entire game, ending the night with 41 saves.
SCHULER AND CO.
The team has a completely different look behind the bench following the addition of three new coaches. Laura Schuler is in her first season at the helm of the program after spending 2015-16 as head coach of the Canadian National Women's Hockey Team, a role she will reprise this season. She is assisted by Chris Cobb, who comes to Dartmouth from ECAC Hockey rival Union, and Courtney Sheary, who spent five years coaching hockey at the Cushing Academy and was a former UNH standout.
AND IN NET…
Chemago started both games last weekend, making 56 saves and allowing seven goals for an .889 save percentage and 3.53 goals against average. She has played 119 minutes so far this season. Dartmouth's other goaltenders, Shannon Ropp and Christie Honor, will also be vying for playing time as sophomores this season. Honor played 136 minutes in her first season on the team, making 51 saves and allowing eight goals for a .864 save percentage and 3.52 goals against average. Ropp appeared in net for 59 minutes, making 24 saves and allowing just five goals for a .828 save percentage and 5.08 goals against average.
