STORRS, Conn. – The Dartmouth field hockey team dropped a non-conference road match-up Sunday at No. 1 UConn.
The Huskies prevailed, 9-2, remaining unbeaten all-time against the Big Green (19-0-2).
The loss sees Dartmouth fall to 3-8 this season, while top-ranked UConn remains the only undefeated team in the nation this season, improving to 13-0.
Freshman Carmen Braceras scored her team-leading sixth goal of the year, while junior Anna Ewasechko notched her second of the season. On the other side of the field, the Huskies got a hat trick from Amanda Collins and two goals apiece from Amelia Iacobucci and Charlotte Veitner.
“We came out to play,” head coach Amy Fowler said. “We continued to improve on our team defense, pressing and our deep defense were decent, against a very skilled and disciplined UConn team.”
UConn took a 4-0 lead into half and built the advantage to six before Braceras finally got her team on the board in the 45th minute with an assist going to Joanne Nazareth. The home team scored the next three tallies before Ewasechko found the back of the cage in the 69th minute for the 11th combined goal of the afternoon.
Goalkeeping duties were split between freshman starter Emma Plumb and sophomore Hailey Valerio. Plumb made 12 saves and allowed six in 48:22, while Valerio came in for the final 22 minutes of play.
“For our team, the game was highlighted again by outstanding play by Emma (Plumb), and we also got a chance to see Hailey (Valerio) under that level of pressure, which is great experience for her, too,” Fowler added. “Scoring twice against a top-ranked team like that also gives us a lot of confidence moving into our final six matches.
“It's nice to get one compliment from the opposing coaches. Nancy Stevens and her staff told us how much they respected that we came out to play and to try to win the game, were very impressed with our goalkeeping and respected that we never gave up, a hallmark of our program, and the legacy of Dartmouth women who have come before this team,” Fowler added. “We have set a new standard for the remainder of the season.”
Dartmouth will look to snap its five-game skid next Saturday (Oct. 15) when it plays host to Ivy League rival Yale at noon.
