NORFOLK, Va. – The Dartmouth women's basketball team fell to Old Dominion, 82-56, at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Virginia on Wednesday morning.
The loss drops the Big Green to 2-3, while the Lady Monarchs improve to 3-2.
For the second consecutive game, Olivia Smith had a solid performance for Dartmouth, leading her team with 14 points, just two points shy of the career high she set last week against Army.
On the other end of the court, Old Dominion's Jeannie Simms poured in a team-high 35 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Destinee Young scored 10 for the Monarchs. Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach, Belle Koclanes said Smith's confidence was one of the positives her team will take away from Wednesday's game.
“We talked about her confidence being a major lesson coming out of today,” Koclanes said. “She was able to attack her matchup, which was what the game plan was going into today. We saw that right away that she had the ability to go right at their post players and also take care of her teammates with three assists. It was a major confidence boost for her to play at that type of level against the athletic team we saw today.”
Old Dominion jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter of play in front of a sold out arena for the team's annual education day. A 10-0 run gave the Lady Monarchs a 17-2 lead, but the Big Green were abled to close the lead to 24-9 by the quarter end. In the second, Old Dominion took control of the game, unleashing a 13-0 run before taking a 48-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Dartmouth came out shooting well in the third outscoring the Lady Monarchs 17-15. Amber Mixon and Smith both came out strong, each draining a three in the opening minutes of the quarter. Kate Letkewicz also shot well behind the arc, draining two threes toward the end of the third.
In the fourth, Old Dominion continued to make shots to extend its advantage to 26 points by the final horn. Also in the fourth quarter, four members of the Big Green's freshmen class made their collegiate debut as Grace Phillips, Danielle Nieters, Julianna Thomson and Gabby Hunter all saw time on the floor in the contests final minutes of play.
“We're always here to compete and play together,” Koclanes said. “There's 16 of us on our roster and we play together, that's the way we want to play. You saw everyone on the team on the floor today. It's about building confidence in our young team and young players. We want them to have that experience. They need to have that experience so they can grow.”
Dartmouth will remain in Virginia when the Big Green travel to William & Mary tomorrow at 7 p.m.
