BURLINGTON, Vt. — Payton Henson posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Trae Bell-Haynes produced a game-high 19 points as Vermont (7-3) defeated Dartmouth (0-7) for the ninth straight meeting between the Twin State rivals, 73-58. Sophomore Evan Boudreaux had a double-double of his own for the visiting Big Green with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and senior Wesley Dickinson matched Boudreaux by scoring a season-high 10 points.
The Dartmouth defense contained the Catamounts in the opening half, holding them to just 10-of-30 (.333) from the floor, including 0-of-7 from long range. But in the second half, Vermont found its stroke, canning 5-of-9 three-pointers while shooting 56.5 percent. In the end, the foul line proved to be the difference as the Catamounts drained 22-of-26 (.846) free throws, making 15 more than Dartmouth (7-of-10), which was the difference in the score.
Henson opened the scoring on a Henson layup, and though Boudreaux answered by draining a 14-footer, Vermont went back on top and maintained a small lead for the first eight-plus minutes. When Dre Willis threw down a dunk, the Catamounts held a 12-9 advantage.
Junior Miles Wright started a seven-point Big Green run by knocking down a pair of free throws before driving for a layup, and senior Ike Ngwudo capped it by raining down his second three-pointer of the game. Two Catamount foul shots interrupted the spurt, but Dickinson boosted the Dartmouth lead back to four at 18-14 with a layup.
Over the next three minutes, however, Vermont rattled off 10 straight points. Anthony Lamb, who had eight points and eight boards, put the Catamounts ahead for good with his two-hand jam with 5:17 left in the half, and Bell-Haynes scored the final four points of the run.
Buckets by Boudreaux and Ngwudo brought the Big Green back within two, 24-22, but Vermont boosted its advantage back to seven by the break, 30-23.
Bell-Haynes had 12 points in the opening half, while Ngwudo had eight and Dickinson six to lead Dartmouth.
The Big Green didn't take long to close the gap in the second half with Wright hitting a floater in the lane and senior point guard Mike Fleming — who sat nearly 15 minutes in the first half with foul trouble — drilled a three-pointer to suddenly make it a two-point contest again. But two Bell-Haynes baskets with the first Catamount three-pointer of the game courtesy of Kurt Steidl sandwiched between them just as quickly boosted the Vermont lead up to nine, 37-28.
The next Catamount long ball, this time from Ernie Duncan who finished with 10 points, gave Vermont its first double-digit edge at 45-35. Three times the Big Green brought the difference back down to eight on layups from freshman Brendan Barry, Boudreaux and Dickinson. Again UVM was able to string together 10 straight points, this time in less than three minutes with Steidl burying another triple along the way, putting the Catamounts up by 18, 59-41, with less than nine minutes to play.
Dartmouth never got closer than 15 the rest of the way, though Barry drilled a pair of three-pointers and freshman James Foye added another in the final two minutes.
Bell-Haynes finished the game hitting 5-of-8 field goals and 9-of-10 free throws for his 19 points, while Henson canned 6-of-10 from the floor and 4-of-5 at the line, plus had four steals on the night.
Dickinson hit on 5-of-8 field goals for his 10 points, and Boudreaux, who entered the game third in the Ivy League with 18.2 points per game, struggled to find his groove, going 5-of-14 overall.
Dartmouth's shooting percentages were solid for the game at 47.8 percent (22-of-46) from the field, 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from downtown and 70.0 percent (7-of-10 at the charity stripe. Vermont dominated the boards, though, 35-24, and forced 14 turnovers while committing just eight.
The Big Green return to Hanover this weekend to host Maine (3-6), which defeated Holy Cross this evening, 55-53. The game will be played on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m., and will be streamed live on the Ivy League Digital Network with Brett Franklin calling the action and Jill Glessner providing insight.
Notes: The 10 points are a season-low for Boudreaux, who has scored in double figures in 31 of 34 career games ... Barry, had played 14 minutes and scored five points in the first six games combined, saw 24 minutes on the court and scored a season-high nine points ... the three-pointer by Foye was his first career collegiate points ... with nine points in the game, Wright now has exactly 600 in his career ... Dartmouth is still 57-44 all-time against Vermont, though the Catamounts have now won 17 of the last 18 meetings ... the Big Green have lost their first seven games for the first time since the 1977-78 campaign.
