LYME, N.H./CRAFTSBURY COMMON, Vt. — The Dartmouth ski team made a push to catch Vermont on the final day of the Dartmouth Carnival, but ultimately fell 30 points shy of the Catamounts to settle for second after winning the previous two carnivals. Vermont won just one of the four events on Saturday, that being the men's 20K Classic at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center, but did just enough to fend off the Big Green, which won two of the races.
With just one Nordic race this weekend, each one counted for double points. Dartmouth may not have placed a skier on the podium in the women's 15K, but with three top-10 finishes, it accumulated 214 points to edge Middlebury (206), New Hampshire (202) and Vermont (198). Senior
Mary O'Connell (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) continued her resurgence this year by placing fifth in 45:19.8, while classmate
Corey Stock (Lincoln, Mass.) finished 12 seconds later, but still good for sixth. A freshman,
Emily Hyde (Bend, Ore.) rounded out the scoring for the Big Green, securing ninth place with a time of 46:13.2.
While the Dartmouth men had one skier step onto the podium following the 20K, Vermont scored the most points thanks in part to Jack Hegman's winning time of 47:33.0. Big Green junior
Fabian Stocek (Jilemnice, Czech Republic) held off a UNH skier to claim the last spot on the podium — his third of the season — with his third-place time of 47:45.3. Finishing sixth was senior
Oscar Friedman (Boulder, Colo.) in 48:10.6 while sophomore
Luke Brown (St. Paul, Minn.) continued the pattern of three by placing ninth in 48:14.2 with junior
Patrick Caldwell (Lyme, N.H.) less than a second behind in 10th. The Catamounts boasted 248 points with the first-, fifth- and seventh-place skiers, while Dartmouth's trio combined for 228.
On the slopes, the men garnered two podium spots to win the slalom. As he did yesterday in the giant slalom, sophomore
Brian McLaughlin (Topsfield, Mass.) led the Big Green and nearly won the race thanks to a stellar second run, which was the best of the collegiate field. But he came up five-hundredths of a second behind Vermont's Dominique Garand with a total time of 1:38.01. Junior
Robert Overing also put together a pair of strong runs to finish third at 1:38.69, while classmate
Thomas Woolson (Warren, Vt.) scored as well with a time of 1:40.04, good for 13th. The 118 points allowed them to squeak past the Catamounts, who amassed 112.
In the women's slalom, New Hampshire had the most success with three of the top six skiers to win by 27 points. Big Green freshman
Alexa Dlouhy, the Edgewise/Winterfell/EISA bib leader in the slalom who had won each of the first three this year, had an opportunity to make it four in a row with the second-best time on the first run. But in her attempt to catch Vermont's Laurence St. Germain, who ended up winning the race by a full three seconds, she fell and did not finish the course. But another freshman,
Hannah Melinchuk (Edmonton, Alberta) provided the team's best time of 1:39.98, good for eighth, with sophomore
Kelly Moore (Ottawa, Ontario) right behind in ninth at 1:40.12. The final scorer for Dartmouth was senior
Maisie Ide (Minneapolis, Minn.) in 11th with a combined time of 1:40.27.
The Big Green will participate in the Williams Carnival next weekend, which will be held at Jiminy Peak in Hancock, Massachusetts, with the Nordic events taking place in Lake Placid, New York, on Feb. 19-20.
