HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's basketball team extended its win streak to five games after taking down Brown at home 60-56, on Friday night.
With the win, the Big Green improve to 12-15 overall and 7-4 in the Ivy League, while the Bears fall to 13-14 and 1-10 in the conference.
Four Dartmouth players finished the evening in double figures in scoring. Senior Lakin Roland led the team with 17 points while sophomore Kate Letkewicz scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Sophomore Amber Mixon continued her strong play scoring a season high 13 points.
“I'm proud of Amber and she's just getting started,” head coach Belle Koclanes said. “Her game tonight was excellent, defensively she just brings another level and dynamic to our team with her pressure and what she does. She had great steals and great awareness picking inbounds passes off. All week long we focused on getting Amber's shoulders square and driving hard to rim and you saw her do that tonight and you saw her get to the free throw line.”
The victory on Friday night is the Big Green's first five game win streak since Feb. 2009.
After dictating play for the entire first half of the game, Brown slowly clawed back in the third quarter after going on an 8-1 run to cut Dartmouth's lead to, 42-32. By the quarter end, the Big Green held a 46-37 advantage heading into the final stanza. In the fourth Brown cut the lead to just two points with just 3:19 left to play.
Dartmouth, ever resilient kept battling despite having its lead trimmed to just one point with 1:29 to play in the game. Two clutch free throws by senior Daisy Jordan gave the Big Green some breathing room and a 57-54 lead. With less than 30 seconds to go, Mixon drained two more from the charity stripe to give Dartmouth the victory.
Once again, the Big Green continued their strong first quarter play as Dartmouth jumped out to a 20-11 lead at the end of the quarter thanks in part to a solid effort for junior Fanni Szabo. The Budapest, Hungry native finished the night with 11 points, just four shy of reaching the 1,000 career points milestone.
In the second, the Big Green continued to make shots to take a 34-21 lead into the locker room at the half to set up the exciting third and fourth quarters.
Dartmouth returns to action for the final home game of the season tomorrow evening against Yale at 6 p.m.
