HANOVER, N.H. – Despite a late rally, the Dartmouth women's basketball team fell to Yale on Senior Night, 65-62 on Saturday as junior Fanni Szabo scored her 1,000th career point.
The loss drops the Big Green to 11-16 overall, 6-5 in the Ivy League, while the Bulldogs improve to 12-17 overall, 3-9 in conference play.
At the 8:45 mark of the first quarter a jumper by Szabo gave her the milestone basket as she became the 18th player in school history to score 1,000 career points.
“It's awesome and you saw it on her face when she hit it that she was more relived than anything else,” said head coach Belle Koclanes. “There are not too many people that get to score 1,000 points, but those of us who have in our career know when you get close to it, it's more nerve racking than anything else. You just want to surpass it so you can relax and play, so I'm grateful she got it early. I'm proud of her, she's going to score a lot more.”
When Dartmouth and Yale squared off in New Haven earlier this season, the Big Green had to come back from a double-digit halftime deficit. Down 33-31 at the half tonight, Dartmouth nearly pulled off another comeback thanks in part to huge performance by sophomore Kate Letkewicz, who finished the night with a career-high 27 points.
“Kate gets better and better every single day,” Koclanes said. “Kate has been hungry since we met her and she continues to make statements. She is so serious about competing and raising her level.”
The Big Green came out of the locker room in the third quarter and unleashed a 7-0 run to cut the Bulldogs lead to five. Yale countered with a 12-0 run of its own to take a 48-33 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Near the 6:40 mark, the Bulldogs were called for a technical foul sending Letkewicz to the charity stripe to shoot three free throws. After making all three foul shots, sophomore Andi Norman scored on a layup to bring Dartmouth within nine points of the lead.
Later in the quarter back-to-back layups by sophomore Amber Mixon made it a one possession game. Yale's Whitney Wyckoff made one of two free throws with 15 seconds to play keeping the Green and White's hopes alive. On the next possession, Letkewicz drained a long three-pointer to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 63-62.
With five seconds remaining, Yale's Nyasha Sarju hit two free throws to clinch the victory for the Bulldogs. She led all scorers with 30 points and 12 rebounds.
The Big Green had one final chance to tie the game with a three, but Szabo's attempt fell just short as the final horn sounded.
Dartmouth returns to the court next week for its final two games of the season when the Big Green travel to league leading Princeton and Penn.
