PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – After a hard fought first quarter the Dartmouth women's basketball team fell at Penn, 65-50 at The Palestra on Friday night.
The loss drops the Big Green to 12-17 overall, 7-6 in the Ivy League, while the Quakers improve to 21-4, 11-1 in the conference.
Senior Daisy Jordan led Dartmouth with 14 points in what was her second to last game in a Big Green uniform. Despite her solid performance, Dartmouth was unable to thwart Penn's powerful starting five. All of the Quaker's starters finished the night in double-figures in scoring as Michelle Nwokedi led all scorer's with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
After a back and forth first quarter that saw nine lead changes, the Big Green trailed by just two. Sophomore Kate Letkewicz drained a three on Dartmouth's last possession of the quarter, she finished the game with 10 points.
“We had a great first quarter fundamentally,” head coach Belle Koclanes said. “We took care of the basketball and we had our five best starters on the floor amped up to play. The difference between Penn and us is Penn can play that way for 40 minutes, we're just not there yet. For us it's about fundamentally getting better at both ends of the floor.”
In the second, Penn unleashed a 13-0 run that spanned the majority of the quarter. An Andi Norman putback jumper ended the scoring drought for the Big Green as Dartmouth outscored the Quakers 8-2 from the 2:36 minute mark onward.
Down 35-26 at the half, the Big Green competed, but a 9-0 run increased Penn's advantage to 53-36 by the end of the third quarter.
“We have the ability to mix up our line ups when we need to,” Koclanes said. “Penn has great height and length and Olivia Smith brings that to the floor with Lakin in foul trouble. “They're also going to zone you all game so you need scoring threats on the floor.”
Dartmouth returns to action for the final game of its season tomorrow at Princeton at 7:30 p.m.
