POTSDAM, N.Y. – There was no quit Saturday night at Cheel Arena for the Dartmouth men's hockey team. However, there also was no win either as Clarkson defeated the Big Green, 4-3, in the regular season finale for both.
Dartmouth (14-14-1, 11-11-0) finishes the season seventh in the league standings and will host No. 10 Colgate next weekend at Thompson Arena in the ECAC Hockey Championship First Round. These same two teams met in the quarterfinals last year with the Raiders sweeping the Green en route to the league championship game.
“I thought we played well. They (Clarkson) capitalized on some great individual plays and made them count,” head coach Bob Gaudet '81 said. “To me, it seemed like we were the better team tonight and the odds are with us most games when you outwork a team, but it just didn't come for us tonight.”
A pair of Jordan Boucher breakaway goals were the difference in the first period as the Golden Knights (18-13-3, 10-9-3) took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. Nick Bligh's first goal since returning from injury was a power-play tally at 15:44 of the opening frame and came between the Boucher markers.
Clarkson netted the first two goals of the second to balloon its lead to 4-1 on scores from Brett Gervais and Sam Vigneault.
A Tim O'Brien goal cut the deficit in half with 1:58 remaining in the middle period.
Corey Kalk's third of the weekend and fifth in his last three games made it 4-3 with 13:33 left in regulation, providing the spark needed for the comeback and pumping new life into the Dartmouth bench for the stretch.
However, the equalizer never came despite a crazed final minute and a half with Charles Grant pulled in favor of the extra skater. Grant finished with 23 saves, while his counterpart in Greg Lewis stopped 35 in the win.
The Green and White held a 38-27 edge in shots on goal and managed the night's lone power-play tally, going 1-for-3 while holding the Golden Knights to an 0-for-2 showing.
