SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Dartmouth softball team defeated Iona 7-2, before dropping a close 1-0 game to North Dakota in the opening doubleheader of the Santa Clara Round Robin Tournament on Friday.
The Big Green are now 3-8 on the season, while the Gales drop to 4-7 and the Fighting Hawks improve to 6-18.
Senior Katie McEachern got Dartmouth off to a solid start in Game 1 with a lead off double to center field. McEachern scored after back-to-back walks by Jessica Harkness, who took the loss falling to 0-2 on the season. The Big Green were not finished when junior Chloe Madill hit an RBI single to left field, scoring two more runs.
With two outs in the first, sophomore Tiffany Dyson singled to left, which plated two more runs for the visitors, giving Dartmouth a five-run lead for the first time this season after one. Dyson finished the day going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
In the bottom half of the inning, after a lead off single, the next three Iona batters went down in order. The Gaels first run of the day came in the bottom of the second when Katie Newton homered to left field. Throughout the rest of the game, senior Morgan McCalmon was solid in the circle giving up just three walks, and striking out seven to improve to 3-3.
Iona tired to mount a comeback in the the bottom of the sixth when Christine Costello led the inning off with a double to left. After the next two batters were retired, an RBI single by Costello plated Newton. After walking the following two batters McCalmon pitched out of a jam getting Courtney Miller to strike out swinging.
In the top of the seventh, the Big Green added two more runs to their lead after junior Maddie Damore tallied her second hit of the ball game. Damore scored on an RBI single by freshman Taylor Ward as Madill scored on an error by the short stop.
Sophomore Breanna Ethridge came in to pitch in the seventh, striking out the final two batters to earn her second save of the year.
In the second game of the afternoon against North Dakota, Ethridge got the start for Dartmouth in what became a pitcher's dual. Emily Bell homered to left field in the top of the second to score the only run of the afternoon. The Big Green did not register a hit until the bottom of the fourth when sophomore Lourlin Lara laid down a bunt for the base hit.
Lara's bunt would be the only Dartmouth hit of the game as Fighting Hawks' pitcher, Kaylin Van Domelen threw seven innings of one-hit ball with nine strike outs to improve to 5-9. Ethridge took the loss for the Big Green lasting six innings, surrendering seven hits and one earned run to fall to 0-3 on the year.
Dartmouth returns to action tomorrow night when the Big Green take on the Gaels at 8 p.m. and the host school, Santa Clara at 10 p.m.
