HANOVER, N.H. – Colgate tied the best-of-three ECAC Hockey first-round series with the Dartmouth men's hockey team Saturday night at Thompson Arena by earning a 5-3 win.
Game 3 is Sunday at 5 p.m. with the winner advancing to the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals next weekend.
“Our guys played really hard. I thought we competed all night and battled back into it in the third,” head coach Bob Gaudet '81 said. “We're a team that knows we can win this series, we just need to play hard for a full 60 minutes Sunday night.”
Connor Yau opened the scoring with his third of the season just 3:37 into the game. But another big second period from Colgate was the scoring that followed.
Willie Brooks, Mike Borkowski and Evan Peterson scored three straight goals for the Raiders (11-23-2) in a span of 8:49 to put the visitors up 3-1. A Brett Patterson power-play tally at 16:17 pulled Dartmouth (15-15-1) to within one heading into the third period.
Freshman Alex Jasiek wasted little time in tying things up, slamming home a rebound at 2:25 of the third, finishing a play from Josh Hartley and John Ernsting.
However, a Darcy Murphy power-play goal with 9:19 remaining in regulation proved to be the winner with Tyson Spink adding the empty netter in the final minutes to seal the victory and force Game 3.
Senior netminder James Kruger did his best to give his team a shot at the win, stopping 24. But, like he had in Game 1, Colgate's Charlie Finn was superb on Saturday, turning aside 40, including 12 in the final period.
Both team's managed a power-play goal in the game with Dartmouth capitalizing on its only opportunity and Murphy's winner with the man-advantage helping the Raiders to a 1-for-3 showing.
In addition to his goal, Yau added an assist in the game for his first multi-point effort. Nick Bligh picked up his third helper of the weekend as well.
The Big Green have some history in Game 3's as of late with this year's senior class boasting a 2-0 mark in the decisive matchups with a road victory at RPI in 2014 and a home win against Harvard the year before as freshmen. Both instances also came in the first round.
“You don't have to say much to get pumped up to play a game like that,” Patterson said afterward. “Your season is on the line. You have to be ready.”
