TULSA, Okla. – Junior Taylor Ng has been named the national winner of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA)/Arthur Ashe, Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award prior to the beginning of the 2016 NCAA Division I Singles and Doubles Tennis Championship on Tuesday.
The award recognizes outstanding individuals in all divisions at the regional and national level. This award, which dates back to 1982, goes to players who have exhibited outstanding leadership and sportsmanship as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
The Haddonfield, New Jersey, native received the Northeast regional version of the award a few weeks ago.
Throughout the 2016 season, Ng played at the No. 1 position for singles during every match, wrapping up the year with a record of 10-8. She had a five-match winning streak in February and March and ended her season with three straight victories. She and sophomore Kristina Mathis played at the No. 1 position and were 14-1. At the conclusion of the regular season, the Big Green junior was named First Team All-Ivy for both singles and doubles play.
For the past two years in a row, Ng has been honored at Dartmouth's annual Celebration of Excellence. As a sophomore, she received the Class of 1976 Award (presented to the most outstanding female athlete of the year) and was given the Class of 1948 Scholar-Athlete Award (presented to the athlete who has combined outstanding performance in athletics and academics) this year as a junior.
Outside of athletics, Ng was named an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2014 and 2015, as well as an Ivy League Scholar-Athlete in 2015 and a Dartmouth Presidential Scholar. The junior is active on campus and in the community: she is the founder of Canaan Kids, the treasurer of Kappa Delta Epsilon, a participant in Big Green Readers and David's House, and an economics tutor.
Ng and Mathis will kick of the 2016 NCAA Championship on Thursday, facing Arizona State's Alexandra Osborne and Ebony Panoho in the Round of 32.
