HANOVER, N.H. – This past weekend, Dartmouth women's tennis played in two Ivy League matches, hosting the Yale Bulldogs on Friday, April 10 before traveling to Providence to take on the Brown Bears on Sunday, April 12.
The Big Green fell to Yale at home, 4-0, before dropping a tight contest with the Bears on Sunday, 4-3. With the two losses, Dartmouth falls to 13-7 on the season and 2-3 in Ivy League play.
Friday: Yale 4, Dartmouth 0
Friday's match against the Bulldogs started in closely contested fashion. Yale took an early lead in doubles play after defeating
Sam Grosjean and
Alexandra Orlins, 6-1.
Peyton Capuano and
Michela Moore pulled the Big Green even, defeating their opponents at first doubles, 6-3.
The doubles point clinching match came down to a tiebreaker.
Josephine Lombardi and
Elise Wong forced the additional play, but fell 7-1 in the tiebreaker, 7-6 overall.
In singles play, Yale won three straight matches to clinch to match, forcing the final three singles matchups to go unfinished.
At fourth singles,
Lauren Han fell to Yale's Werdiger, 6-4, 6-1. At sixth singles, Lombardi was beaten 6-4, 6-1. At fifth singles, Grosjean lost her first match 6-3 but fought in the second despite ultimately falling, 7-5.
Capuano dropped her first set at first singles 6-4 and was trailing in the second 5-3 when the match was called. Moore fell in her first second doubles set 7-5 and was playing in a 2-2 tied second set. At third singles, Orlins won the only singles set of the day for the Big Green, 6-3. She was trailing 5-4 in the second when the match was called.
Sunday: Brown 4, Dartmouth 3
On Sunday, the Big Green were looking to win their third straight match against the Bears, and got out to a good start, sweeping doubles play.
At second doubles,
Sam Grosjean and
Alexandra Orlins cruised to a 6-2 victory followed by
Peyton Capuano and
Michela Moore's 15
th doubles win of the season at first position, 6-3, to secure the doubles point for the Big Green.
Josephine Lombardi and
Elise Wong were leading their third doubles match 5-3 when the Big Green clinched the point.
Singles play came down to the last match, as the Big Green were only able to win two matches, ultimately falling to the Bears.
At third singles, Orlins fell 6-1, 6-1 as the first singles match to conclude. Capuano's match at first singles finished next, as Capuano won 6-3, 6-1.
Lauren Han then fell at fourth singles, 6-1, 6-3.
Moore's singles match wrapped up next. She fell in the first set at second singles, 6-4, before battling back to force a tiebreak in the second. She ultimately dropped the tiebreaker 7-4 to fall in the final set, 7-6.
Lombardi won her sixth singles match to keep the Big Green alive, defeating Brown's Qin, 6-2, 6-2.
It all came down to Grosjean's fifth singles match. The sophomore cruised through the first set, collecting a 6-0 win. She fell in the second set, 6-2, as the individual match and match point down to the final set. Grosjean fought but ultimately fell to Brown's Woo, 6-3, securing the 403 victory for the Bears.
Up Next: Dartmouth women's tennis will return home for its final matches of the regular season next weekend, hosting Cornell and Columbia. The weekend will kickoff with a match against the Big Red on Saturday, April 18 at 1 p.m. The regular season finale against the Lions will take place on Sunday, April 19 with first serve at 1 p.m. Sunday's match will also be Senior Day for the Big Green, as the program recognizes its two seniors:
