SAN DIEGO, Calif. – After starting the day in the back of the pack, the Dartmouth sailing team soared to seventh place in the opening Western Semifinal round of the Inter Collegiate Sailing Association Gill Coed National Championship.
The Big Green tallied 92 points on day one of the four-day regatta, as the U.S. Coast Guard led the field with 49 points. Georgetown is in second with 64 points, followed by George Washington with 67, the College of Charleston with 85 and Hobart and William Smith with 88 points.
Six races were completed across the A and B Divisions on Tuesday at the San Diego Yacht Club, as each school vies to finish in the top nine in order to qualify for the National Championship round. Dartmouth recorded two top-five finishes in Division A and three top-five finishes in Division B.
After the first few races of the day, the Big Green found themselves in 13th before slipping as far back as 17th. Dartmouth battled back to the top nine thanks in part to its strong effort in Division B.
The Big Green will look to clinch a berth in the final round when the teams return to the water for the second semifinal round tomorrow at 10 a.m.
