HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's hockey team defeated Union, 2-1, at Thompson Arena on Friday evening, picking up its second victory in a row. The Big Green improved to 4-12-0 and 2-8-0 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Dutchwomen fell to 3-20-0 and 0-11-0.
Sophomore Caroline Shaunessy scored the first goal early in the first period, while senior Eleni Tebano had the game winner in the third. Sophomore Alyssa Baker and freshman Christina Rombaut were quite the pair, assisting on both of Dartmouth's goals. Between the pipes, Robyn Chemago had 21 saves in her first win in 2017.
“Union played a great game against us,” head coach Laura Schuler said. “They really played us hard all the way through and forced us to work for the win. I am really excited for our girls. They worked hard tonight and continued to build on things from previous games. But, there is more work for us to do and we're going to have to keep plugging away.”
For the second game in a row, Dartmouth struck first. At 5:28 in the opening period, after the puck spent a lot of time behind Union's net, Shaunessy had a great snipe from the top corner to make it 1-0 in Dartmouth's favor.
The Dutchwomen had their best opportunity at a goal early in the second period when Brandy Streeter – fresh out of the box – skated through the Big Green defenders and fired at Chemago, but her shot was deflected over the crossbar. In all four of its power-play opportunities that period, Dartmouth was on fire, but netminder Kate Spooner kept the Green off the board.
The first six minutes of the third period were played with very few whistles or shots. At the seven-minute mark, junior Morgan Turner tried her luck, but her shot was saved by Spooner's left skate. A minute later, seniors Kennedy Ottenbreit and Mackenzie St. Onge put together a nice play, but were not able to connect. At 8:06, Baker picked up a loose puck that had been knocked off Rombaut's stick and sent it to Tebano, who fired into the right corner to give Dartmouth a two-goal lead.
Things got interesting when two Big Green players ended up in the box. Twenty seconds after the second Dartmouth penalty was called, Union scored its only goal of the night to cut the Big Green's lead to one. Dartmouth fought through the next three minutes and one more penalty to hold on to the lead.
The Big Green outshot the Dutchwomen, 34-22. Both team's penalty kill was on point and, out of 13 combined opportunities, just the last goal was with the extra player.
Dartmouth has a tough game coming up tomorrow against Rensselaer at 3 p.m. The Engineers defeated the Harvard Crimson, 3-1, before making the trek to Hanover.
