TROY, N.Y. – Seniors Grant Opperman and Troy Crema each scored a pair of goals as the Dartmouth men's hockey team came away from Houston Field House with a 4-2 win against Rensselaer.
Opperman notched his first two-goal game since Nov. 15, 2014 against Brown and just the second of his career, while Crema's was his second of the year with the first coming at Robert Morris on Nov. 27.
The Big Green (6-8-3, 3-6-2 ECAC) scored three goals in the third period after they took the host Engineers (4-20-1, 2-11-0) into the final frame tied at 1-1.
Opperman scored his second of the night and third of the season at 10:46, opening the scoring floodgate. Crema redirected a point shot from Connor Yau — who was originally credited with the tally — roughly four minutes later for his seventh of the season.
That would stand up as the game winner with Rensselaer's Jacob Hayhurst scoring the home team's second of the contest soon thereafter to make it a one-goal game again at 3-2.
Crema then hit the empty net with 2:09 to go, icing the win and helping the Green to just their second road victory of 2016-17.
Freshman Clay Han notched the first two assists of his career in the third period, setting up Opperman's second and Crema's first. Junior Corey Kalk also dished out a pair of helpers in the win, setting up the first and final goals.
In goal, Devin Buffalo made 31 saves in the win, including 14 in the third when the Engineers were looking to pull even. RPI's Chase Perry stopped 36 in a losing effort.
For the seventh straight game, the Big Green scored on the power play, going 2-for-6 with the man-advantage. Rensselaer also scored twice on six opportunities with the extra skater.
Dartmouth is back in action Tuesday night at home against No. 2 Harvard. Puck drop from Thompson Arena for the start of a three-game homestand is set for 7 p.m.
