THIS WEEK
Coming off three home games last week, the Dartmouth women's hockey team will have an identical schedule this week, except all three contests will be on the road. The Big Green will kick things off two hours south of here against Harvard, facing the Crimson at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. In addition to be on the Ivy League Digital Network (ILDN), the game can also be viewed on NESN.
LAST TIME OUT
Dartmouth swept all three of its games last week by scores of 2-1, the last of which came in overtime.
Dartmouth vs. Union
The Big Green picked up its second conference win of the season on Friday by defeating the Dutchwomen. Caroline Shaunessy scored the first goal early in the first period, while Eleni Tebano had the game winner in the third. Alyssa Baker and Christina Rombaut were quite the pair, assisting on both of Dartmouth's goals.
For the second game in a row, Dartmouth struck first. At 5:28 in the opening period, after the puck spent a lot of time behind Union's net, Shaunessy had a great snipe from the top corner to make it 1-0 in Dartmouth's favor.
The Dutchwomen had their best opportunity at a goal early in the second period when Brandy Streeter – fresh out of the box – skated through the Big Green defenders and fired at Robyn Chemago, but her shot was deflected over the crossbar. In all four of its power-play opportunities that period, Dartmouth was on fire, but netminder Kate Spooner kept the Green off the board.
The first six minutes of the third period were played with very few whistles or shots. At 8:06, Baker picked up a loose puck that had been knocked off Rombaut's stick and sent it to Tebano, who fired into the right corner to give Dartmouth a two-goal lead.
Things got interesting when two Big Green players ended up in the box. Twenty seconds after the second Dartmouth penalty was called, Union scored its only goal of the night to cut the Big Green's lead to one. Dartmouth fought through the next three minutes and one more penalty to hold on to the lead.
Dartmouth vs. RPI
On Saturday, the Big Green concluded the week by winning their third straight game, defeating the Dutchwomen in overtime.
Just over a minute into the overtime period and 13 seconds into the power play, Kennedy Ottenbreit ended the game in dramatic fashion, shooting to the right when netminder Lovisa Selander was covering her left post after saving two shots just before. Baker and Tess Bracken were credited with the assists. Dartmouth's other goal that scored in the opening minute of the second period was Cecilia Lopez's second of her career and the week.
The game got off to a quick start when RPI got on the board just 50 seconds in. A backhander by Laura Horwood found its way into the far corner of the net to give the Engineers an early one-goal lead.
Dartmouth one-upped RPI by scoring 48 seconds into the second period. With the puck in Engineer territory, Lopez intercepted a pass meant for a player in red and fired a rocket to the left to tie the game at 1-1 with her unassisted goal.
Eight minutes into the third, Rombaut wrapped around the net and, when her shot was saved by Selander, Tebano tried her hand at pocketing the rebound, but the goalie was able to make another save. RPI came alive in the third and outshot Dartmouth, 11-8, but neither team could make it past the other goaltender and the game went to overtime.
The five-minute overtime period proved to be a lot shorter than that. Fifty-six seconds in, Horwood – RPI's top scorer – got two minutes for boarding, which left her team playing a man down with four minutes to go in overtime. Thirteen seconds later, Bracken took a shot, which was saved and rebounded to Baker, whose shot was also saved and deflected. The third time, Selander was not so lucky, and Ottenbreit swept in and put the puck in the corner to win the game.
SCOUTING HARVARD
The Crimson have not won a game since defeating the Big Green back in October, though they did tie Colgate (3-3), to end the first half of the season, and Quinnipiac (2-2) to open the second half. Since then, Harvard lost to Princeton (2-1), Boston College at Frozen Fenway (3-1), RPI (3-1) and Union (3-2). Lexie Laing has made it to double-digit points with her four goals and six assists.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE CRIMSON
On Oct. 23, 2016, Dartmouth dropped its ECAC Hockey opener to Harvard, 5-1, at Thompson. Bracken scored the Green's first goal of the season and just the second tally of her career halfway through the second period. Bailee Brekke also ended the day with a point by assisting on the marker, getting the first point of her collegiate career.
Penalties were the name of the game, as each team committed nine, six of which occurred in the third period.
After a scoreless first period that saw Dartmouth have a 10-4 shot advantage, both teams found their stride in the second to score a combined three goals. Harvard got on the board first with a Sydney Daniels power-play marker at 3:50, getting the puck from Haley Mullins just outside the crease and pocketing it in the left corner of the net.
At 9:46, Brekke's shot from the right circle was saved by Brianna Laing, but unfortunately for the Crimson goaltender, the puck bounced to the left of the crease and was sent behind her left leg by Bracken to tie the score at one-all. Less than three minutes later, Lexie Laing scored the eventual game-winner, receiving the puck from her sister in net and skating freely down the right side to send it into the left corner of the cage.
Three more goals were scored in the third, but all were netted by Harvard. Val Turgeon made it 3-1 at 9:34, while Daniels completed her hat trick with markers scored at 13:17 and 16:09, giving the Crimson a 5-1 edge that would last until the final whistle.
AND IN NET…
Chemago had a good weekend in net, winning both games. Throughout her 121 minutes between the pipes, she allowed just two goals, had a combined 38 saves, 0.99 goals against average and a .950 save percentage. In 14 games, she has played 783 minutes, has allowed 34 goals while making 435 saves, and has a .922 save percentage and 2.60 goals against average. Christie Honor picked up her first collegiate win in the 2-1 victory over UNH. In three games so far this season, she has made 79 stops and allowed 10 goals for a .888 save percentage and 3.45 goals against average. Dartmouth's other goaltender, Shannon Ropp, has not appeared in a regular-season game, but had a strong performance in the exhibition contest against McGill.
