THIS WEEK
The Dartmouth men's hockey team plays host to a trio of Ivy League and ECAC Hockey foes this week as Harvard, Yale and Brown all come to Thompson Arena. The week begins Tuesday night with the Crimson before the Bulldogs make their way to Hanover on Friday and the Bears on Saturday.
LAST TIME OUT
The Big Green are coming off a 1-1 road trip to the New York capital district against No. 11 Union and Rensselaer. Dartmouth dropped the opener on Friday, 4-1, at Messa Rink against the Dutchmen, but bounced back the following evening up the road at Houston Field House with a 4-2 win against the Engineers.

TWO FOR TWO
- Seniors Grant Opperman and Troy Crema each notched two goals in the win in Troy, accounting for all four of Dartmouth's goals. Opperman scored the first two of the night, one early in the first period and another midway through the third. Crema tipped in a point shot soon thereafter for the eventual game winner and then hit the empty net in the final minutes to seal the victory.
- The last time a pair of Dartmouth teammates each scored two goals in the same game was Nov. 6, 2105 when Jack Barre and Nick Bligh accomplished the feat against Brown in a 7-3 home win.
SCOUTING HARVARD
- The Crimson fell four spots from No. 2 to No. 6 this week in the national polls following a weekend sweep at the hands of RPI (4-0) and Union (2-1). Oddly enough, it was Harvard's first time being shutout since a 0-0 tie at Rensselaer last season.
- Harvard will look to bounce back after suffering losses in consecutive games for the first time since the ECAC Hockey Championship Game and the first round of the NCAA Tournament last year against Quinnipiac and Boston College.
- The Crimson have a potent scoring threat with Alex Kerfoot (8-17-25), Tyler Moy (8-13-21), Sean Malone (10-10-20) and Adam Fox (2-17-19) all in the top 20 in scoring amongst ECAC Hockey skaters.
- In goal, no other conference netminder has played a higher percentage of his team's minutes in goal than junior Merrick Madsen (97.1%). His 11 wins are tied for second in the league, while his 9.15 save percentage is sixth and 2.31 goals against average is fourth.
SPLITSVILLE
For the first time all season, a goalie other than Devin Buffalo started in the Big Green net as freshman Adrian Clark made his first career start last Friday night at Union. Buffalo got the nod the next day against RPI and made 31 saves — including 14 in the third period — to earn his sixth win of the year.
EVERYTHING ON NET!
No other team put more pucks on net last weekend than Dartmouth. In two road games, the Big Green saw 75 of their attempts find their way on net. Forty of those shots came on goal in the RPI win as the visitors held a 40-33 edge a night after outshooting Union, 35-24.
POWER-PLAY SUCCESS!
It's been quite the turnaround for the men of Dartmouth on the power play since the start of the season. The Green and White have now scored at least one power-play goal in seven straight games dating back to the 5-1 home win against UNH on Dec. 10. Eight of 10 power-play goals this season have come in that stretch as they scored two Saturday.
BACK IN HANOVER
The Big Green and Crimson played a preseason contest in Hanover back on Oct. 22. The game ended in a 3-3 tie while Harvard won the shootout, 3-2. Daniel Warpecha, Carl Hesler and Opperman all scored goals in the organized scrimmage. There were a combined 21 power-play chances in the game, with each team scoring twice with the man advantage.
SKATE WITH THE BIG GREEN
The Dartmouth men's and women's hockey teams will be hosting an outdoor skating event open to the public on Sunday at Occom Pond in Hanover. Check back with DartmouthSports.com as the date approaches for times and weather announcements.
A PAIR FOR CLAY
Freshman defenseman Clay Han picked up the first multi-point game of his career with a pair of assists in the RPI win. Han set up Opperman's second of the night and the eventual game winner from Crema. He came into the game with two goals this season and no helpers.
GIVE COREY TWO
For just the second time this season, junior Corey Kalk notched two helpers in a game, feeding Opperman a pass through the crease for the first and then hitting Crema alone in the slot for the empty netter. It was his third multi-point game of the season.
SPEAKING OF MULTI-POINT GAMES
With Opperman, Crema, Kalk and Han all registering two points in the game, Saturday marked the second time this season that four Big Green players recorded a multi-point effort on the same night. Crema, Kalk, Josh Hartley and Will Graber all accomplished the feat as well in a 5-0 home win against Princeton the previous Friday.
CAPTAIN CARL
- Carl Hesler scored Dartmouth's lone goal Friday against Union. Hesler redirected a Hartley point shot on the power play to tie up the game 1-1 at that point. For Hesler, it was his first goal against a netminder this season as his only previous tally of 2016-17 was an empty-net goal against Colgate on Nov. 5.
- The captain kept things rolling the following night with an assist early in the first on Opperman's first score before an injury caused him to leave the game and not return.
ROOKIE SCORING
- Despite no goals from the freshman class on the road trip, Dartmouth's Class of 2020 continues to play well, leading all ECAC Hockey teams with a 1.06 goals per game mark from its rookies.
- The 12 goals at home and 0.71 goals per home game from the freshmen are also far and away the top figure among the league's 12 programs.
- The six third-period goals from the first-year players is one more than Clarkson's rookie class in six fewer games.
HOME AGAINST HARAVRD
- Dartmouth has not scored a goal at home in the last two seasons against the Crimson, suffering 2-0 and 7-0 losses. The last Dartmouth win at home came on Nov. 30, 2013 when the Big Green came into the game 0-8-0 on the season and left with a 2-1 win.
- Eric Neiley '15 netted the game winner at 17:19 of the third period to break the 1-1 tie and help the home team to its first victory of the 2013-14 season.
- Grant Opperman's second career goal at 13:34 of the middle period that night makes him the only active player on this year's roster with a home point against the Crimson.
