HANOVER, N.H. – Troy Crema scored two goals, including the tying marker with just 1:33 remaining in regulation, but the Dartmouth men's hockey team fell in overtime to visiting Brown Saturday night, 4-3.
The Big Green (7-10-3, 4-7-2 ECAC Hockey) battled back after falling behind early in the final period, but the Bears (4-14-1, 3-10-0) snapped a nine-game losing streak to Dartmouth in Hanover with captain Andrew Doane's first of the season in OT.
“We played well in the first and third periods, but they were better than us in the second and made us pay for it,” head coach Bob Gaudet '81 said. “There has to be a better level of pushback when that happens.
“I was proud of the way we responded in the third to get that tying goal and we had some chances in OT, but it just wasn't there for us to capitalize on in the end,” Gaudet added.
Dartmouth jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on goals from freshman Ryan Blankemeier and then the first from Crema coming on the power play.
Brown outshot the home team in the second, 13-4, scoring twice in that stretch with Davey Middleton and Max Willman getting the goals.
The Bears followed up their strong middle frame and took the lead just 44 seconds into the third on a Brent Beaudoin marker, setting up for the late-game fireworks from Crema.
The senior's 12th goal of the season was a redirect of a Corey Kalk shot from the top of the right circle. The puck sailed through the slot where Crema was stationed. He lifted his right leg and stuck out his stick slightly, changing the direction of the puck inside the far post for the equalizer and his third point of the game after also recording an assist on the Blankemeier score.
Devin Buffalo made 30 saves in the game, including two spectacular stops with his paddle on Doane and Middleton right before the former finally smacked the loose puck from the crease into the back of the net. Gavin Nietro made 28 saves in the OT win for the Bears at the other end of the ice.
Brown finished with a 34-31 edge in shots, but was held scoreless on four power-play bids, while the Green were 1-for-3 on the man-advantage.
Dartmouth heads out on the road for two weeks, starting with games at Colgate and Cornell next weekend followed by a Feb. 3 game at Harvard.
