DURHAM, N.H. – Tuesday night hosted what proved to be a battle between the No. 20 Dartmouth men's soccer team and No. 18 New Hampshire. Led by two goals from Robin Schmidt, the Wildcats took a 4-2 win over the Big Green.
“It was a tough result tonight,” said head coach Chad Riley. “We are all disappointed with how we responded to their first goal in the second half, I felt that was the critical moment where they lifted their effort and ours dipped.
“The second half was a little bit of an anomaly for us. Credit to UNH, they were better on the night. Now we have to let it sting, but quickly turn our focus to our preparation for Columbia.”
The loss moves Dartmouth to 8-3-1 on the season while New Hampshire improves to 10-1-3.
The Big Green got on the board first in the 36th minute, when senior Matt Danilack headed the ball into the net on an assist from junior Justin Donawa.
Danilack's goal was the lone score of the first period, but New Hampshire came out strong in the second half. In the 46th minute, Robin Schmidt stole the ball out from keeper Christopher Palacios and scored into the net.
In the 65th minute, the Wildcats found themselves in scoring position again, when Jack Doherty sent a long pass to Schmidt who was near the goal and headed in the ball on an angle scoring the second goal. New Hampshire struck again in the 78th, on another header shot from Siggi Geirsson.
With the Wildcats leading 3-1, the Big Green tried to bridge the gap with another goal. Freshman Dawson McCartney scored in the 84th minute on a shot from 10 yards out and cut into the lead.
UNH was still in attack mode and scored its final goal in the 88th minute, Doherty sent in a shot from the left side of the net that went past Palacios and scored.
The Wildcats out-shot the road team 12-9, and with high physicality there were seven fouls for each team.
This weekend Dartmouth will return to action, hosting Ivy League foe Columbia on Saturday night at Burnham Field at 7 p.m.
