HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth drained a season-high 12 three-pointers, five from junior Miles Wright, and led by as many as 14 before hanging on for a 74-71 triumph over visiting Penn on Saturday night. Wright finished with a game-high 19 points while sophomore Evan Boudreaux added 18 points and 11 rebounds for his 10th double-double to help the Big Green (4-15, 1-5 Ivy) earn their first Ivy League victory and end a six-game skid.
The Quakers (7-11, 0-5 Ivy) got 15 points from Darnell Foreman and 12 more from Sam Jones off the bench, but left Hanover still searching for their first conference win.
Dartmouth led for the entire second half, extending its advantage to as many as 14 on two occasions, both after three-pointers by sophomore Guilien Smith, who finished with 15 points. The second time came with 11:27 to play, two minutes after he was whistled for a technical foul after a scrum for a loose ball, before Penn started to whittle away at its deficit.
Four minutes later, A.J. Brodeur sank a pair of foul shots to close the gap to five at 56-51, but freshman Ian Sistare answered by beating the shot clock with his second three-pointer of the night — one more than he had produced all season. Penn rallied with seven straight points, the last of which came on a four-point play by Jones, and suddenly it was a two-point game with 6:27 remaining.
The Big Green had an answer to every Quaker score the rest of the evening, however. When the difference was at two again with 3:37 showing, Wright ripped off a three-pointer. Jones responded with a triple as well, only to have Wright immediately rip the net from downtown again.
Foreman drove for layup, but Boudreaux came right back with a turnaround 12-footer on the baseline to keep the lead at five as Penn called time with 1:31 to play.
The score remained at 70-65 until Penn's Matt MacDonald hit the second of two foul shots with 26.6 seconds left. The Quakers eventually fouled senior Mike Fleming, who had missed just one free throw all year, but he could not get the front end of a one-and-one to fall. Dartmouth's misfortune quickly turned as Wright ended up with the offensive rebound and quickly went up for a layup, only to have it roll out for another twist to the plot. Penn was fouled on the next rebound, but Brodeur could only manage to hit the second of his two foul shots, making it a three-point contest with 15.4 seconds left.
It was Smith who came through in those last seconds for the Big Green, twice converting both ends of a one-and-one to secure the victory.
Penn used the three-ball to take a 15-8 lead barely five minutes in, hitting a trio of treys. Dartmouth was ignited by a three-pointer by freshman Brendan Barry that began a 14-2 run over more than seven minutes with the go-ahead points coming on a breakaway dunk by senior Wesley Dickinson.
Foreman broke the long offensive slump for the Quakers with a driving layup, and eventually Penn was able to retake the lead at 30-28. Junior Taylor Johnson set the tone for the second half, during which Dartmouth hit seven of its 12 trifectas, by raining down a high-arcing shot from behind the line to give the Green the lead for good, leading to a 33-31 edge at the intermission.
While Dartmouth's dozen three-pointers bested Penn's eight, it was on the glass where the Big Green had its biggest advantage at 37-25, although the Quakers were able to score six second-chance points off of six offensive boards and Dartmouth jus three points off of 13 offensive caroms. Penn also turned 12 Big Green turnovers into 22 points, doubling the host's total off of eight Quaker miscues.
Dartmouth finished the game 26-of-56 (.464) overall from the floor and 12-of-27 (.444) from long range, plus hit 10-of-14 (.714) at the foul line. Smith made all six of his free throws, plus had a career-high five of the Big Green's season-high 17 assists with Fleming adding four more.
Boudreaux did the yeoman's work in the paint, knocking down 7-of-13 shots to go with his 11 boards, while Wright canned 5-of-7 from deep and 7-of-12 overall to account for his 19 points.
Penn hit more free throws, but left even more points at the line by converting just 13-of-21 (.619), which proved costly. Foreman matched Wright with seven field goals in 12 tries, but provided just one three-pointer for his 15 points. Jones hit 3-of-4 triples as the Quakers hit 34.8 percent (8-of-23) from distance and 25-of-53 (.472) from the floor. MacDonald and Ryan Betley, who added 11 points, each had five rebounds to lead Penn on the glass.
Dartmouth returns to the road next weekend when it plays at Yale (12-6, 4-1 Ivy, tonight's game at Cornell postponed until tomorrow due to a power outage) on Friday night and Brown (11-11, 2-4 Ivy) the following evening. Both games will be streamed live on the Ivy League Digital Network, while the game against the Bulldogs will also be shown live on ESPN3. Penn's task gets no easier as it hosts league-leading Princeton (12-6, 5-0 Ivy) on Tuesday.
Notes: The 12 three-pointers were the most by a Big Green team since dropping a dozen on Cornell in an 87-78 victory on March 1, 2014 … Dartmouth has won the last four games against Penn in Leede Arena, its longest against the Quakers since taking six straight home games from 1955-60.
