HANOVER, N.H. – The ninth-ranked Dartmouth men's squash team fell to No. 3 Columbia, 8-1 at the Berry Squash Courts on Sunday morning.
With the loss, the Big Green drop to 5-6, while the Lions improve to 9-2 overall.
During the first round of matches, senior Nick Harrington, junior Jack Harvey, and sophomore Carson Spahr all fell to their opponents in close three-game matches. Harvey's nail-biting final two games in particular drew a decent crowd for the close finish.
The single victory for Dartmouth came during the second round by sophomore Matthew Giegerich. Giegerich got off to a two-game lead, but his opponent rallied back, tying the match at two games all. In the final game, Giegerich took the match decisively with an 11-2 win. Senior Glen Brickman and Freshman Brandon De Otaduy both fell to their opponents in three well contested games.
To start off the third round of matches, junior Alvin Heumann put up a tough fight against one of the top players in college squash but ultimately lost in three games. Meanwhile, junior Brian Giegerich took the first game of his match in extra points after saving four game balls, but this took its toll and he lost the next three games. In the final match of the day, sophomore Sam Epley put on a show for the crowd. Both Epley and his opponent played incredibly high-pace and high-quality squash. Epley entered the third game with games tied at 1-1, but he ended up losing the match in a tight 4 games.
The Big Green return to the court the court this Wednesday when Dartmouth hosts Williams at at 5 p.m.
