LA JOLLA, Calif. – No. 37 Dartmouth women's tennis opened its Spring Break trip on Saturday, defeating San Diego, 4-3, at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. The Big Green improved to 10-1, while the Toreros fell to 5-8.
Senior Jacqueline Crawford and freshman Allison McCann got things started with a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles and, although San Diego narrowly won at the No. 2 spot, a 6-3 victory by senior Taylor Ng and junior Kristina Mathis at No. 1 gave the first point of the day to Dartmouth.
Ng soon made it 2-0 for the Big Green with her 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Nicole Anderson at No. 1 singles and, following a victory by the Toreros at the No. 5 spot and a 6-2, 6-4 victory by freshman Chuyang Guan at the No. 6 spot, the score was 3-1 in Dartmouth's favor.
San Diego won at the No. 2 and 4 positions to make it a tied match (3-3), leaving it all down to Mathis and Gemma Garcia at No. 3. The Big Green junior dropped the first set, 7-5, but won the remaining two by the same score to clinch the win.
