BATON ROUGE, La. – Dartmouth men's tennis defeated LSU by a score of 4-3 at the LSU Tennis Complex on Tuesday. The Big Green won their first match of their Spring Break trip and improved to 6-9, while the Tigers dipped to 5-11.
"For the second match in a row, we came out strong on all three doubles courts," head coach Chris Drake said. "I'm really happy with the tone we set in doubles on the road against a good team. The guys who won their first sets in singles did a great job concentrating and finishing their matches in straight sets. This is a quality win against a very good team from the SEC."
Dartmouth got off to a good start by winning two close matches at the No. 1 and 2 doubles positions. At the top spot, senior Diego Pedraza and sophomore Roko Glasnovic had a 6-4 victory over Jordan Daigle and Justin Butsch. Senior George Wall and freshman David Horneffer had a 7-5 defeat of Julian Saborio and Gabor Csonka on court two to give the Big Green a one-point lead.
At the No. 3 position, junior Max Fliegner and freshman Charlie Broom were tied with Rafael Wagner and Agie Moreno, 6-6, when the match went unfinished.
The Tigers soon had a 2-1 edge following wins at the No. 1 and 2 singles positions, but that was when the Big Green came alive. Dartmouth knotted the match at two-all after Horneffer took a 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 4 position against Csonka and Broom made it 3-2 with his 7-6, 6-0 defeat of Rafael Wagner at No. 3.
LSU tied the match at 3-3 following a win on court six and the deciding point fell upon Wall and Nikola Samardzic at the No. 5 position. The Dartmouth senior easily won the first set, 6-3, but Samardzic took a 3-0 lead in the second set. Wall fought hard and pushed the match into a tiebreaker and clinched the match for the Big Green with a 7-6(3) win.
Just two more Spring Break matches remain on the schedule before Dartmouth returns to Hanover. On Thursday and Friday, the Big Green will face No. 20 Tulane and No. 28 South Alabama.
