HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth men's tennis opened Ivy League play with a 4-1 loss to Harvard at the Boss Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. The Big Green dipped to 7-11 overall and 0-1 in conference action, while the Crimson improved to 13-8 and 1-0.
“Credit to Harvard – they came out in both doubles and singles and really took it to us in terms of energy, aggressiveness and competitive presence,” head coach Chris Drake said. “As coaches, we need to do a better job having our guys ready to compete with energy, with belief in their games, and with conviction. We have a standard for those things at Dartmouth, and it is our job to make sure our players are in a position to execute them every match. We will attack this week of practice with purpose and with the mindset that we will do a better job with these controllables against Yale on Friday.”
The Crimson took the first point of the afternoon with a 6-2 victory at the No. 3 position and a 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot. At No. 1 doubles, senior Diego Pedraza and sophomore Roko Glasnovic were trailing Brian Yeung and Kenny Tao, 5-3, when the match went unfinished.
At the No. 5 singles position, senior George Wall tied the score by defeating Grant Solomon, 6-0, 6-2, getting Dartmouth's only point of the afternoon. Harvard won at No. 1, 6 and 3 to end the match, but the scores were closer on the two courts that did not finish. At the No. 2 position, freshman Charlie Broom dropped his first set to Jean Thirouin, 6-4, but countered with a 6-2 win in the second set. They were just starting the third when the match went unfinished. At the No. 4 spot, freshman David Horneffer took the first set against Andy Zhou, 6-4, and was leading 4-3 in the second when the match was ended.
