Dartmouth Ski Team | Nordic | Alpine
Dartmouth is blessed with a wealth of talent on both the men's and women's alpine teams this year with all six NCAA skiers from last year back on the roster this winter. Leading the men's team is World Cup skier Brian McLaughlin, a first-team All-American in the giant slalom last year and the slalom the year prior. Ffifth-year senior Thomas Woolson, who earned the most points or any Big Green skier at the NCAA Championship last winter, was nearly an automatic top-10 finisher at every carnival a year ago, and sophomore Tanguy Nef had an impressive rookie campaign with a carnival win and two other podiums before earning a spot on the All-America Second Team by taking sixth in the slalom at NCAAs.
Men's head coach Peter Dodge, now in his 29th season at Dartmouth, has more talent in his arsenal beyond that top trio. Sophomore David Domonoske had a solid showing in his first carnival season last winter, finishing eighth in the slalom on two occasions, and has shown even more speed during training this year. The Big Green also have another member of the Fucigna family joining the squad this year in freshman Peter Fucigna, along with another rookie in Kalle Wagner who have significant potential. Add another fifth-year in Preston McLaughlin into the mix, and Dodge has a very competitive team that will push each other to greater heights.
The women are just as strong as the men with a World Cup skier of its own in senior Foreste Peterson. Like McLaughlin, she garnered a spot on the All-America First Team each of the last two years, once in the slalom (last year) and once in the GS. Junior Alexa Dlouhy is a threat to win any slalom race she enters, having won four races with three more podiums and never placing lower than seventh, and had three top-10 GS finishes last year before claiming 13th at NCAAs. With senior Kelly Moore, Dartmouth gets consistency as she finished no worse than ninth in all but three races over the last two years, and she narrowly missed out on All-American honors in both at NCAAs by placing 11th in the slalom and 12th in the GS.
The Anny Jenny Women's Head Coach of Alpine Skiing, John Dwyer, is cultivating others to step up this year and the future, most notably sophomore Steph Currie (no, not this guy). Last year she finished in the top 10 of all but one race that she competed, including a pair of podiums in the giant slalom. Currie's sister, senior Meg, is particularly adept in the slalom with five top-10 finishes in 2017. Fresh talent is also abundant for the women, particularly with freshmen Claire Thomas and Hannah Utter, the former more familiar with skiing in the West as she hails from Utah, while the latter comes to Dartmouth after attending Green Mountain Valley School, which has produced a plethora of skiers for the BIg Green.
The first alpine carnival events take place at Quarry Roads Trail in Waterville, Maine, as hosted by Colby this weekend, starting on Saturday with the classic races.
