BURLINGTON, Vt. – Dartmouth picked up a much-needed momentum boost with a 2-1 overtime victory over local rival Vermont Tuesday night in Burlington. Sophomore
Dawson McCartney made his presence felt with a game-tying goal in the 76th minute and his pressure in overtime led to the own goal winner for the Big Green.
Dartmouth (3-4-3) and Vermont (7-4-0) were even with 16 shots each, but the Big Green were more accurate outshooting the Catamounts 10-6 on goal. Vermont held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Dartmouth started the game on the attack with two shots each for
Kota Sakurai and
Justin Donawa in the early going. The Big Green finished the half with a 9-5 advantage in shots but neither team could find the back of the net, keeping it scoreless at the break.
Vermont controlled the tempo in the beginning of the second. It paid off on the Catamount's fourth shot of the half when Jon Bryant scored his second goal of the season off an assist from Geo Alves to make it 1-0 in the 64th minute.
The Big Green took full advantage of a Catamount foul in the 76th minute. McCartney fired a free kick from 30 yards out and found the back of the net to tie the match at one and eventually send it to overtime.
It took just over six minutes for Dartmouth to secure its third win of the season. It was McCartney again who put pressure on the Vermont defense. The sophomore booted the ball towards the goal and it deflected off a Catamount defender and bounced in, starting the celebration for the Big Green.
Dartmouth continues its Ivy League schedule at home on Saturday when they take on Yale at 4:30 p.m. on Burnham Field.
