AKRON, Ohio — Dartmouth sophomore
Sam Ohno endured a roller-coaster ride at the Firestone Invitational hosted by the University of Akron, but finished the third and final round on a high with the day's low score at 5-under par (67). His torrid performance allowed him to jump 18 spots in the standings into third place with a 6-under 210 as the Big Green finished 11th in the 17-team field, shooting 284-296-297—877 (+13).
Not only was Ohno's 6-under showing believed to be the lowest score in relation to par for a tournament ever by a Dartmouth golfer, but his 8-under 64 in the opening round yesterday set a program record. Only his 7-over 79 in the second round denied him medalist honors, which went to Ohio's Zach Crawford at 10-under par (69-69-68—206), three strokes ahead of Eastern Michigan's Ty Celone and four in front of Ohno.
Ohno began the day with a birdie on 10, then added another on 12 before a small setback with a bogey on 14. But he quickly erased that with an eagle on the 356-yard par-4 15th hole, his second of the tournament and only one of the 17 recorded that came on a par-4. With a birdie on 17, he reached the turn at 4-under par. Ohno promptly birdied the first two holes of the course and added another on the seventh to give him six in the round to help him tally his 67.
Junior
Will Bednarz and freshman
Mark Turner both contributed a 3-over 75 to the team score with three and two birdies on the day, respectively, to go with 11 pars apiece. Turner finished the invitational tied for 60th overall with a 9-over 225 while Bednarz was a stroke back tied for 64th.
Senior
John Lazor, who entered the final round tied for fifth at 4-under par to lead the Big Green, struggled out of the gate before sinking a birdie and an eagle in the span of three holes to right the ship a bit. But his 8-over 80 dropped him back into a tie for 39th with a 220 (+4).
Host Akron won the team title at their home invitational for the first time ever with a 7-under 857, one stroke ahead of Furman and two ahead of Eastern Michigan and Ohio, the latter of which entered the day with a two-stroke advantage over Connecticut. The Zips, meanwhile, made up a seven-stroke deficit thanks to a 2-under 286 while Ohio could only muster a 7-over 295 in the round.
Dartmouth will conclude its fall schedule at the Camden Collegiate Invitational hosted by South Carolina on Oct. 20-21.
