CAMDEN, S.C. — Senior
John Lazor led the Dartmouth men's golf team on the first day of the Camden Collegiate Invitational, carding a 73-72—145 (+5), as the Big Green finished the day in ninth place with a 30-over 590. Host Furman is tied atop the leaderboard with USC Aiken at 7-over par (567) while Francis Marion and USC Upstate are two and three strokes back, respectively, in the nine-team tournament.
Four of the five Dartmouth competitors improved their score in the second round as they got a better feel for the course, while the fifth golfer, freshman
Mark Turner, matched his first-round score of 74 on his second 18. Lazor maintained consistency throughout the day, making par on 27 of the 36 holes, tied for the fourth-most at the end of the day. He added one birdie on a par-4 in each round — the first on 11 (his fourth hole of the round) and the other on 4 (his third-to-last of the day).
Sophomore captain
Jason Liu tied Turner in 32nd place with an 8-over 148 on the day, but with a 75 (+5) to start followed up by a 73 (+3). Liu got a boost on the par-5 13th hole in his opening round, sinking an eagle, before adding a birdie on the first hole. He added two more birdies in the afternoon, while Turner had four of his own over the 36 holes.
Liu wasn't the only Big Green golfer with an eagle today as sophomore
Sam Ohno dropped his on the same hole, plus added a pair of birdies as he ended up tied for 44th with a 77-74—151 (+11). Just one stroke behind Ohno was junior
Will Bednarz, who after struggling with an 80 in his first round, matched Lazor for the low Dartmouth round of the day with a 2-over 72 on his second 18 with a pair of birdies to finish up at 12-over par in 48th.
USC Aiken's Top Kamnark will enter the final round tomorrow with a one-stroke lead thanks to his 5-under 65 in his second round. Steffen Smith of Gardner-Webb sits second with a 3-under 137 while Grant Sellars of Francis Marion and Jack Crosby of the host Paladins are both 2-under par.
The third and final round will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday with Bednarz one of the first off the tee.
