ATLANTA, Ga. — Freshmen
Kristen Chen and
Kaitlyn Lees each carded a 4-over 76 in the first round of the Alexa Stirling Intercollegiate on Friday afternoon, leading Dartmouth to wrap up the day in 10th place against a strong field that featured four teams from the top-40 nationally. Louisville, ranked No. 36, was the lone team to finish under par, shooting a 286 (-2), six strokes ahead of Virginia Tech.
Chen started her day on 12 on the par-72, 6,210-yard course at the Atlanta Athletic Club, making par on her first four holes before taking a bogey on 16 and balancing it out with a birdie on 18. Her front nine featured seven more pars before suffering a pair of bogeys on her final two holes to end her round. Lees, on the other hand, started with a bogey on 11, then parred the next seven holes. Birdies on the second and fifth holes highlighted her front nine, but a double bogey on 10 to end her day put her at 4-over with Chen, tied for 24th
Junior
Kristen Soh wrapped up the first round with a birdie on the par-3 seventh hole, but tied for 52nd place with an 8-over 80. Sophomore
Moon Cheong was a stroke behind Soh, tied for 54th, including a birdie of her own on the par-5 18th.
Senior captain
Catharine Roddy did not compete due to illness, but is expected back on the course on Saturday for the second round.
Louisville's Lauren Hartlage took a four-stroke lead on the individual leaderboard by sinking eight birdies, five coming after the turn, to card a 66 (-6). Keera Foocharoen of Virginia Tech struggled at the start of the round, sitting at 3-over through four holes, then sank five birdies over the final 14 to claim second at 2-under par.
The second round will begin tomorrow morning with Roddy, the first Dartmouth golfer, teeing off at 9:30 a.m.
