HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth volleyball team took its match against Cornell to four sets, but ultimately fell (17-25, 15-25, 25-17, 17-25). The Big Green dipped to 7-12 overall and 3-6 in Ivy League play, while the Big Red improved 10-8 and 6-3.
Â
Freshman
Nicole Liddle led the way with 10.5 points and eight kills, adding one assist, one ace, one dig and two blocks. Classmate
Annemarie Horn had 18 assists, senior
Zoe Leonard was first with 16 digs and junior
Carly Tower had seven total blocks.
Â
"This was a tough loss for us," head coach
Gilad Doron said. "I thought we started the game slowly and our serving and passing was not on par. Cornell came very prepared and was more physical than us. In game three, we found our rhythm and started doing nice things. We just didn't have our best game tonight. It is disappointing to open the festivities of Homecoming with a loss, but we have another chance tomorrow against Columbia to prove that we are determined to change the outcome of this weekend."
Â
Cornell took control of the first set and soon had a 15-6 edge. Kills by sophomore
Tola Akinwumi and senior
Samantha Bozoian lessened the Big Red's lead, but a Cornell kill and a Dartmouth error ended set one (25-17).
Â
The visitors had another good rally to start the second set (6-1), but after a timeout, the Big Green showed up and, kills by sophomore
Elise Petit and junior
Abby Kott and some Cornell errors, got them within one (8-7). The Big Red took off from there and soon had a 2-0 edge (25-15).
Â
Dartmouth came out strong in set three and, following three Cornell errors and a kill by freshman
Nicole Liddle, had a 4-1 advantage. The Big Red threatened throughout the entire set, but the Green never let them get too close. With a 20-16 lead, a Dartmouth run highlighted by a Tower kill and an ace by junior
Corinne Cox gave the Big Green the third set (25-17).
Â
The Green took the momentum from the set before into the fourth, going on a 6-1 run following kills by Tower, Cox, Liddle and freshman
Francesca Meldrum to start things off. Cornell responded with a rally of its own to take the lead, but four consecutive points gave Dartmouth an edge once again (11-8). The Big Green stayed ahead until four Big Red points made it a 14-12 match in Cornell's favor. Dartmouth remained in contention until six in a row gave the Big Red a 22-15 edge. Meldrum got one more kill before Cornell ended it (25-17).
Â
The Big Green will return to the court on Saturday with a 5 p.m. match against Columbia.
