HANOVER, N.H. – Playing in sleet and freezing temperatures for the entire game, the Dartmouth women's rugby team suffered a 12-3 loss to Harvard in the Ivy Rugby Championship at Brophy Field on Saturday.
Both the Big Green and the Crimson are now 6-1 on the season.
"Congratulations to Harvard," head coach
Katie Dowty. "They played a great game today. We are obviously disappointed with the loss, but we will use it as motivation to finish this season even stronger. Wet conditions like today really change the dynamics of a match and we will keep fine-tuning how we adapt to those conditions. We will learn from this and be ready and hungry as we head into the NIRA Championship playoffs."
Control could have gone to either team to start the game, which featured a lot of back-and-forth action along the midway line. Dartmouth broke the 0-0 tie 10 minutes in when a good penalty kick by senior
Kat Ramage gave the home team a 3-0 edge.
The Crimson responded seven minutes later with an unconverted try to take a slight 5-3 lead. The teams played an even game in worsening conditions over the next 23 minutes and Harvard took a two-point advantage into the half.
The visitors came out strong in the second half and another try and a good kick increased their lead (12-3). Dartmouth camped out in Harvard's end and got close to the tryline a few times, but were stopped each time. The Big Green continued to battle, but ran out of time to do any damage.
On Saturday, Nov. 10, the Big Green will play in the NIRA Quarterfinal.
