HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth men's hockey team defeated visiting Army West Point, 5-2, Saturday night in its Ledyard Classic opener in front of 3,143 fans at Thompson Arena.
Â
There is now a de factor Ledyard Classic Championship game Sunday night at 7 p.m. as the Big Green take on No. 10 Providence after the Friars defeated Brown, 3-1, in the early game.
Â
It looked like the Black Knights (8-9-1) were the better team early on as Kevin Dineen scored just 2:05 into the game. However,
Drew O'Connor's team-leading sixth goal of the season answered back for the home team just a minute and six seconds later.
Â
Alex Jasiek's second of the year five and a half minutes after that gave the Big Green (5-6-1) a 2-1 lead and it's first multi-goal first period all season.
Â
Quin Foreman pulled even with O'Connor, scoring his sixth of the season 6:05 into the second period with
Carl Hesler's third of the year 10 minutes later giving the home team a 4-1 lead through 40 minutes.
Â
Joey Matthews' first career goal gave Dartmouth its fifth straight tally as he ripped a shot from the halfboards into the far top corner of the net. The Black Knights capped the scoring less than a minute later as the Green and White pushed its unbeaten streak against Army to six games (5-0-1) dating back to 1996. Army has not beaten Dartmouth since the 1990-91 season (a 4-3 OT win).
Â
Adrian Clark made 23 stops and showed great resiliency in bouncing back after allowing the early marker. Twenty-one of those saves came in the final two periods of play.
Â
Another disciplined game saw the boys in Green whistled for just one minor, which is successfully killed off to keep its resurgent penalty kill rolling, sporting a 95.0 percent success rate since the second week of November. In that same time, Dartmouth averages just 5.56 penalty minutes per game, the lowest figure in the country.
Â
Hesler, Matthews and Jasiek all finished with a goal and an assist each. Playing on his 21st birthday,
Collin Rutherford picked up an assist, while
Brendan Demler collected his first point of the year with a helper of his own.
