NEW HAVEN, N.H. – Friday night at Ingalls Rink was all about the 'Timber Line' for the Dartmouth men's hockey team in a 6-4 win against Yale.
Quin Foreman became the first Big Green (13-13-2, 11-9-1 ECAC) freshman with a hat trick in 15 years, while also dishing out an assist for a four-point night. Linemates Shane Sellar (1-2-3) and Will Graber (0-3-3) combined for another six points on a goal and five assists. In all, the trio combined for 10 points, the second time this season they have hit double figures in a game.
The aforementioned line is named for the size of the trio with Sellar and Foreman coming in at 6-foot-3 and Graber measuring 6-foot-5, towering above other lines like trees in a forest.
With the result, Dartmouth sweeps Yale (14-13-1, 9-11-1 ECAC) in a season series for the first time since 2005-06 and secures home ice in the first round of the ECAC Hockey postseason tournament next weekend. Opponent information and game times will be announced this week on DartmouthSports.com.
The Big Green raced out to a 3-0 lead midway through the first with Sellar opening the scoring followed by two from Foreman just 73 seconds apart. Yale chipped away at the deficit with two goals to close out the opening frame.
On his 23rd birthday, sophomore defenseman Clay Han scored his first of the season on a slapshot from the top of the circles with Sellar and Foreman picking up helpers.
Foreman's hat trick goal came at 8:26 of the second period, making him the first Dartmouth rookie since Hugh Jessiman to accomplish the feat. Jessiman had two hat tricks as a rookie with the second coming on Jan. 25, 2003 at home against Rensselaer.
Junior Alex Jasiek capped the Dartmouth scoring with a power-play goal at 14:37 of the middle period, his fourth goal of the season. Joey Matthews picked up an assist on the play, his second of the night to give him the first multi-point game of his career.
Yale scored twice in the third, dominating possession in the hopes of tying the game. Joe Snively's second marker and fourth point of the game came with the goalie pulled for the extra attacker at 13:43. Snively went over 100 points for his career, earning a nice ovation from the crowd.
The Timber Line was the story of the game in the offensive end, but an incredible effort by another Dartmouth trio on the penalty kill was perhaps the most exciting series of events in the contest.
Freshman Brendan Demler, junior Kevan Kilistoff and senior River Rymsha were on the ice for the entire one minute and 53 seconds of a 6-on-3 Yale power play as the Bulldogs pulled the goalie trying to jumpstart the comeback. But the three Big Green skaters blocked shots, got in passing lanes and kept the puck away from the front of the net en route to a successful kill.
Devin Buffalo did the rest as the senior and reigning ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week stopped 31 in the game and 12 in the third period for the win.
Dartmouth chased Yale starter Sam Tucker midway through the game after he allowed five. His replacement Corbin Kaczperski stopped eight, while allowing just one in 28 minutes.
The Big Green close out the regular season Saturday night in Providence against Brown. Puck drop from Meehan Auditorium is set for 7 p.m. Check back with DartmouthSports.com.
