PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The finale of a three-game series at Penn was favorable for the Dartmouth softball team which took a 3-1 win and opened conference play on a high note. The Big Green improve to 8-12 on the season with a 2-1 Ivy League record, while the Quakers fall to 4-14 overall and 2-4 in the league.
After a split doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, Dartmouth came out to Penn Park looking to close the series with a win and was able to do so in the final two innings.
Penn got on the board early, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, when Tabitha Dyer grounded out with runners on second and third, batting in Molly Oretsky.
The road team struggled offensively for a bit, only recording two hits through the first five innings, but remaining strong defensively not allowing any more runs to be scored by the Quakers. In the top of the sixth, the Big Green got the ball rolling when Tiffany Dyson advanced to first base on a fielding error and Calista Almer bunted for a single, putting runners on first and second.
Morgan Martinelli then reached first on a fielder's choice, as Dyson was tagged out at third base, leaving runners on first and second with two outs. Junior Taylor Ward then came up to bat smacking her third home run of the year, and taking the 3-1 lead.
Freshman pitcher Heather Turner got the start on the mound today, tossing five innings, allowing six hits and one run with one error, walking one batter and striking out one as well. Senior Breanna Ethridge came in for relief, pitching two innings where she allowed just one hit and struck out two to close the game.
Dartmouth continues conference action this weekend, and finally opens the home schedule, with a doubleheader against Columbia on Saturday starting at 12:30 p.m.
