Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2020 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers."
This installment features Ethan Ruh of the men's track & field team. One of the top throwers on the team, Ruh posted the best mark in the shot put (15.67m) and the second-best in both the discus (42.11m) and hammer throw (40.62m) during the 2018 season.
DartmouthSports.com: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Ethan Ruh: I mostly have been studying and training. I am taking a difficult course load with two labs and our off-season training is intense, so I have been pretty occupied with those. I am excited for things to slow down so I can do things like kayaking in the Connecticut and cliff jumping at various places around New Hampshire and Vermont.
DS: What was it in the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
ER: My official visit. I was really apprehensive about applying early decision, but my official visit completely changed my mind. When I got on campus, I felt the welcoming atmosphere that Dartmouth has. Dartmouth also struck me as a collaborative environment where people work together with their strengths, instead of against each other. Dartmouth also has a beautiful campus, especially in the fall with the leaves changing.
DS: Other than your parents, who has had the greatest influence on your life?
ER: My brother Ryan. Ryan is my only sibling, and he is ten years older. He and I both want to be physicians. My brother graduated medical school last year and started residency, so he has been helping me along the way and telling me the best way to do things. He introduced me to track and field, and without him it is unlikely I would be where I am today.
DS: Outside of sports, what are you most passionate about?
ER: I love to cook, and there is something special about cooking a good meal for yourself and having the gratification of getting to have it and know you made it. It is something above simply going somewhere and picking it up. I also enjoy the experimental part of it, and playing around with the recipe to see what I like best. My favorite things to cook are ribeye steaks and burgers. I love cooking on a grill, smoker, or cast iron pan.
DS: How is Hanover different or similar to where you grew up?
ER: I grew up in Omaha, Nebraska. Omaha is very different from Hanover. Omaha is far larger in size and population than Hanover. I lived about 14 miles from where I went to high school and had to drive everywhere. Hanover was odd to me because everything is within walking distance. Omaha also has far less snow than Hanover. In high school, we would have cancellations for two inches of snow, but in Hanover, we will get way more than that and it doesn't even cross anyone's mind that class should be cancelled. Hanover also doesn't have a chipotle or a Chick-fil-A, so that has taken some adjustment for me as those were my two favorite fast food restaurants.
DS: What is your useless/hidden talent?
ER: My hidden/useless talent is that I can drink a 16 oz. bottle of water in under five seconds without crushing the bottle.
DS: What are your plans for your upcoming off-term?
ER: In my off-term, which is the upcoming fall, I will be doing research at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. I will be doing research with the Davis Lab, which is a part of the Center for Gene Cell Therapy and Gene Therapy. This aligns with my major and academic interest, cell biology.
DS: Who would play you in the movie of your life?
ER: If I had any say in it, I would choose Adam Richmond from Man vs. Food, as he seems like a fun guy and we have the same appreciation for food. If anyone else had the choice, though, it would be Zach Galifianakis as I'm told I look extremely similar to him. I'm not sure if that is a compliment or not...
