BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Dartmouth men's soccer team came up short in its season opener, 3-0, to No. 6 Indiana in its first game of the ADIDAS/IU Credit Union Classic Friday night.
The Hoosiers scored once in the first half and twice in the second to come away with the victory and start the Big Green off with an 0-1-0 record on the season. Indiana improves to 2-1-0 on the year and has defeated two top-25 teams on the young season.
Playing in their home opener, the Hoosiers scored on their first shot of the game in the 21st minute when Andrew Gutman used a header to score off a double assist from Cory Thomas and Trevor Swartz. Neither side was able to get a shot off for the remainder of the half.
A
Tiger Graham header that sailed wide left of the net was the best opportunity the Big Green had to tie the match in the early minutes of the second half. Indiana took advantage of its chances and made it a 2-0 lead in the 70th minute when Griffin Dorsey found the back of the net.
It did not take much longer for the Hoosiers to put the game away in front of their home crowd. Austin Panchot picked up his first goal of the season in the 79th minute to extend the Indiana lead to 3-0.
"Being our first game it was tough, they (Indiana) are last year's runners up and didn't lose many players,"
Bo Oshoniyi, the Bobby Clark Head Coach of Dartmouth Men's Soccer said. "Indiana had one shot on goal in the first half so we did okay. Their fitness and waves of attacks were tough. The guys understand what we need to do and we are looking forward to Sunday."
Each side finished with one shot in the first half, but the Hoosiers ramped up the pace in the second with 10 shots compared to the Big Green's one. Indiana came away with four corner kicks for the game, while Dartmouth did not have any.
The Big Green stay in Bloomington where they take on No. 24 Notre Dame on Sunday at 5 p.m. to finish the ADIDAS/IU Credit Union Classic.
