ITHACA, N.Y. — Freshman
Mark Turner provided the low score for the Dartmouth men's golf team on the first day of the Cornell Invitational, carding a 2-under 140 to finish the first two rounds in a tie for seventh place while helping the Big Green tie with host Cornell for sixth place in the 15-team field on Saturday at Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell. Yale, with a 14-under 554, owns a commanding 19-stroke advantage ahead of St. Joseph's, which is just six strokes in front of Dartmouth in sixth.
While Turner was enjoying a strong collegiate debut, the Big Green actually had another golfer perform a little better in sophomore
Sam Ohno. The left-hander entered the tournament as an individual, so his 4-under 138 — highlighted by a 66 (-5) in the opening round — did not count toward the Dartmouth team score, though it did leave him all alone in fifth place. Ohno finished the day with 12 birdies, matching Temple's John Barone for the most in the 81-player field.
Turner, meanwhile, sank nine birdies of his own, six of which came during his opening round 67 (-4) on the 6,904-yard, par-71 course, to join Ohno in the top 10.
After the first round, sophomore captain
Jason Liu was just one stroke behind Turner in a tie for sixth with a 68 (-3), having ripped off five birdies over the first 12 holes. The second round was not as kind to Liu, however, as he fell back into a tie for 28th after finishing the second 18 with a 77 (+6).
Senior
John Lazor was a mere stroke behind the team captain in a tie for 33rd at 4-over par (146) as he matched Liu with seven birdies in the two rounds. Freshman
Charles Petrie had identical 75s, tying for 52nd at 8-over par, and junior
Will Bednarz was two strokes behind Petrie.
Twelve players came in under par after 36 holes, led by Siena's Jared Nelson, who shot a 67 in each round. He will take a two-stroke lead over Barone into the third and final round on Sunday, while Binghamton's Justin Lane and Yale's Eoin Leonard are both just three strokes back and one ahead of Ohno.
Play will begin on Sunday morning at 8 a.m. with Bednarz in the first group to tee off.
